I just loop the cable through the tribrach, between the bottom plate and the instrument base.

Since I don't leapfrog with my robot, I keep the tribrach locking screw run all the way into the locked position, and I filled the access hole with a bit of rubber and cut it off flush. So a thief would first have to pick the rubber out of the hole and then have a small screwdriver handy to back out the locking screw before he could remove the gun from the tribrach.

It's theft deterrence rather than theft prevention, but it's easy enough to do.

I would like to see the manufacturers put in a tracker device and cell modem in the total stations. An extra $100 or so on an instrument that can cost up to $40K

In my cynical way of thinking I could see a benefit to the manufacturers to NOT have it...instrument gets stolen, you buy a new one with insurance money.

But someone who steals a man's way to make a living should be severely punished. Castration would not be out of the question.

In Miami I would think the instrument would be sent out of the country almost immediately, probably to South America or the Caribbean.

My R10 has a cell modem, and it sends emails upon certain configurable events. It would be useful if you could set it to "base mode", and if the tilt sensor detects a change, then it sends a message. Would also be useful for making sure it doesn't get blown over or disturbed.

This approach has limitations. If a customer's premium-to-payout ratio gets too low, he won't able to renew his policy. With big-ticket claims in particular, he may only get one bite of the apple.

Almost all Topcon and Sokkia optical instruments sold have a standard (free) feature called TS Shield. The owner registers the instrument on a server and every time it is turned on the service determines a few things- first of all is if there is a firmware update available- the location of the instrument and status. IF your instrument is stolen you can track (as long as it is on) and you can send a command to lock it down. You can use the coordinates to notify the authorities etc. For more info go to one of our web sites- www.topconpositioning.com or www.sokkia.com.

I did not know that. Sounds like a great feature.
