anyone but law enforcement from informing ebay one of their listed items is stolen.

I just went to Leica My World, and after entering serial number shown on item #251673805778 (Leica GPS900), Leica reports this item stolen from Czechoslovakia. Then, when I attempt to report the stolen item to ebay, a message informs me that only Law Enforcement can let ebay know an item is stolen.

If anyone has knowledge of how to get info to ebay please do so. I do not want others to experience what I experienced back in 2006 (bought Leica TCRA1100 series Robotic total station for $10,800, then had to give it away without compensation 2 years later plus the loss of $4000 on attorney trying to "help").

Also, just 3 weeks ago I bought a Leica GS14/CS10 on ebay. Ends up it was stolen, but now I know how to protect myself. As soon as I unboxed the equipment I was on the phone with Leica reporting the serial numbers. Within a few hours Leica informed me the stuff had been stolen from out of Miami. My money was refunded by PayPal.

Why not report it to law enforcement and let them handle it?

From the ebay pictures it's manufactured date is 2008 and it's reported as stolen from a country that hasn't existed since 1993? :'(

I reported a stolen Item to eBay and they never worked with the police that wanted to set a trap, they just took it down and told the seller why. Just tell local law enforcement was the lesson learned

I am soooo done with eBay anyway and will be looking for another auction site

Because EBAY connects buyers and sellers worldwide, the lack of any universal world laws, they can not cross borders to go after the crooks.

In country you can contact your local law enforcement with a hot tip to their hot line to get their interest.

It helps to have locals contact the local law enforcement who would arrange to pick up item instead of having it shipped.

I've bought many survey items thru EBAY and they were all from other surveyors and a few dealers on there with only one bad experience and was for something not survey related and less than $20.

The ability to ask questions and contact seller options is there for a reason, use it often to feel them out.

The item is located out of the US. How would you go about contacting police in another country?

I posed as an Ebay bidder working with an owner/victim to set up a sting on stolen equipment. The cops got their man. The owner/victim got his equipment. I got a small reward.

The thief got jail..

Many people, on both sides of the pond, still refer to that area as "Czechoslovakia".
My Grandfather always said he was from Czechoslovakia rather than Bohemia.
And I know, on my last trip to Germany the locals still called it that.
Even though the country has been split, there is still a strong sense of unity among the people that live in the area. One older gentleman told me that the name changes were more for ease of mail delivery than national identity.
So, someone reporting a theft in that part of the world, would see nothing unusual about giving the regional name rather than the State name.
