Hey guys, I just stumbled across the site and I like what I see here. I hope I can learn from you guys and teach you a thing or two.
I work in a small legal survey office in the Lower Mainland, with 7-9 employees. I've been a CAD tech, Crew Chief and Project Manager for the past 12 years. I've been at this current company as a project manager and occasional surveyor for 10 months now.
I don't have any formal education in surveying, but have taken Civil Drafting, Structural Design, and Business Management programs in the past. I would love to pursue becoming a licensed professional land surveyor, but I don't have the resources to attend school for two years, full time.
I've started my own business doing CAD work and project management, but I found there was too much conflict of interest with my current employer, so I have focused on my full time job.
Cheers,
Alan
Hello Alan, welcome to the board.
You will find surveyors from all over here - lots of Americans, some Canadians but others too - I'm in New Zealand, there are a couple of Australians and a few from Europe.
Cheers

Welcome.
Welcome Abby Al
Judging from your moniker, and your picture of the Mission Bridge, I'm guessing that you are from Abbotsford. I lived in Abbotsford for 20 years. Graduated from Abby Senior in 1978.
Old Guy from British Columbia (and other places)
Welcome. The more the merrier.
You may have noticed that sometimes I say things that others simply don't say because they know better. My filter must not be quite as fine as some. Anyway, here's the deal. Your handle reminded me of some lines from an old movie. I"m praying your middle name is not Norm. The following quote from the 1974 movie, Young Frankenstein, starring Gene Wilder as Dr. Frankenstein and Marty Feldman as Igor explains.......................
Dr. Frederick Frankenstein: [to Igor] Now that brain that you gave me. Was it Hans Delbruck's?
Igor: [pause, then] No.
Dr. Frederick Frankenstein: Ah! Very good. Would you mind telling me whose brain I DID put in?
Igor: Then you won't be angry?
Dr. Frederick Frankenstein: I will NOT be angry.
Igor: Abby someone.
Dr. Frederick Frankenstein: [pause, then] Abby someone. Abby who?
Igor: Abby... Normal.
Dr. Frederick Frankenstein: [pause, then] Abby Normal?
Igor: I'm almost sure that was the name.
Dr. Frederick Frankenstein: [chuckles, then] Are you saying that I put an abnormal brain into a seven and a half foot long, fifty-four inch wide GORILLA?
[grabs Igor and starts throttling him]
Dr. Frederick Frankenstein: Is that what you're telling me?
haha, Thanks guys (and Holy Cow),
Yes Norman, that's the Mission Bridge. We're doing daily monitoring on it right now.
That bridge was brand new when my family moved to Abbotsford in '75.
Hi Al,
Nice to see another BC'er around here. Are you monitoring with reflectorless, or prisms on the structure?
Welcome
BCIT has a part time survey program.

I did the majority of my survey education, evenings and weekends.
BCIT says they will accept some credits from other institutions, so you should talk with them, most especially about other colleges distant learning opportunities.
Paul in PA
Steve, We're monitoring it mostly reflectorless, with target stickers, and a couple shots on bolts for the structure. The rest are ground features and are shot with a range pole.
Thanks Paul, I'll look into it. I got my business diploma going to school evenings and weekends. It wasn't easy (especially with 4 kids at home), but it was well worth it.
My other option that I was thinking of was to start a construction surveying business.
