I'm thinking that by the time you find and buy an HP48gx and an SMI card you will be into it around $500. And it will be a 15 year old calculator. There are some free cogo programs out there, such as Copan, and some for pay ones such as ProCogo for less.

Also northings and eastings etc. coords.

No - I would say that your best bet would be an HP 41CX with Surveying I module - but I am just a wee bit partial to the 41!

Good. If you were an engineer I might not worry about it, but I try to treat Land Surveyors with respect.

You can use the SX.
It has only one slot for the program and not another for extra memory to store points and raw data.
For versions up to and including v5, 256K memory card is sufficient.
v6 & v7 need at least 1mb or larger to be truly functional and store a lot of info including F2F, points and raw data for several jobs.
An APE card will do simple COGO.
To do some real deal surveying, a DCE or more able card is really needed and will keep up with the Raw data that is entered either by hand or electronic from the instrument and have the ability to stake to a line or curve.

I thought we were discussing using it as a calculator. My SX has plenty of memory for my calculations. It does pretty complicated calculations relatively quickly as well. They also have two card slots, but I can run the law of cosines without needing either of them. I can pick up an SX @ a much better price than the GX if I don't need that extra punch or to use it as a data collector.

Yes the GX is awesome and better than the SX (as long as you don't have one with that glitch that makes it hard to turn on). 😀

You can also find some old time software for the hp 48 - 50 genre at HPCALC.org. I have a few of mine on there from days past. Those are free and require a little knowledge to upload, but some very useful stuff still.

The D'Zign package is my hand-held software of choice. SMI is very good as was the HP survey pack. I do not use them anymore as I moved on the the TSC2 DC. It does most everything you mentioned.

You all are being very helpful. Thank you all. I truly beleive that I need any HP 48 calculator with a standard cogo card. Memory is not important

Howdy,

I don't want to distract you from your search but have you looked into any software alternatives? Does anyone know of any free apps that do this sort of thing?

OK guys I won an Ebay auction for an HP 48gx with SMI overlay and an SMI Basic Cogo Card for $135 including shipping. I saw that card alone on Ebay for $289! Do you all think I got a good deal as I do?

That would be a good deal for an HP48 with no extras if it's in good shape. Congratulations.
