Bow Tie Surveyor, post: 345802, member: 6939 wrote: I'm not sure if we have ever met, but I have heard of Consul-Tech. My real name is Cary Melvin. I am a 2nd generation surveyor and a graduate of the University of Florida Geomatics program. I was a mid-level corporate surveyor that mainly just dealt with technical issues, but got burned out on that a few years ago and decided to go solo. I can't say that I have been all that successful thus far, but it is educational.

Pleased to meet you Cary! I had a couple of grads from the U of F Geomatics program working with me before I retired. Great school Great program! Stick with it Cary! I started out as a high school dropout making $2.75 per hr as a tail chainman in 1973 I always put in the "after hours" time to out think and out work the competition. It paid off. As time progressed I began making a substantial salary that allowed me to retire early. Surveying and Mapping is not the easiest road to financial success, but if you have a passion for it,you will do very well in spite of this fact.. Work hard and stay on the cutting edge. Best of Luck with your career Cary!!

I see youre in Altamonte Springs I lived in Apopka! We did the original Survey Base Map for Altamonte Springs in 1986.(I was General manager of Darby & Way Inc at the time. It was a Citywide 2nd order Class II survey establishing State Plane Coordinates on all section and 1/4 section corners where a CCR had been filed. We also published the coordinates for the traverse points. The City's Land Development Code required that all new subdivisions be tied to a monument on this map in order to create their initial GIS Base Map.This was in the very early days of GPS and we used Network Inc out of Cape Canaveral to establish coordinates on selected monuments throughout the City.At the time, there were only 4 satellites and we had a "window"(usually 3 or 4 AM lol) to observe them. We then established azimuth points for each base station by shooting Polaris with a T1 We then spent the next 5 or 6 weeks traversing between the stations (all night work) We then hired Dr Ray Hintz to assist in balancing and adjusting the survey. He used his Least Squares adjustment program that he developed as a professor at the University of Maine.(This was cutting edge technology in 1986.I believe our total contract was for $32,000.We spent at least $75,000 to fulfill the contract. That project nearly put us out of business. LOL Sorry for the LONG war story But it always comes to mind when I hear Altamonte Springs

Any particular reason (besides my being older than you) that you feel a need to be disrespectful? Sounds like a little maturity wouldnt hurt you a bit Nate The "Surveyor"
