Why is this site so fast?

I click on Beerleg.com with my dial-up and it comes up in a few seconds. Even with the avatars and stuff it really loads quick (just like the OLD POB).

What are all these other websites doing that makes them so slow?

www.cnn.com take a minute or more to load!

The new POB takes 20-30 seconds to load; then goes in slow motion every time I click on something?

I think Wendell mentioned something earlier about a new server.

look at how busy cnn's page is, though. there doesn't seem to be that much information being loaded on beerleg, in comparison, so naturally it would be faster. and it may also be how many people are online at cnn vs. how many people are online here (significantly less!), but i'm not sure how servers and bandwidth and stuff like that plays out.

Speed in composing/fetching a response is part of it, but another part is that so many sites now don't just give you html. They send a ton of script stuff to compose the screen on your end, and it may take 100's of Kbytes of scripts and styles to paint what 10K of html could do if they were willing to give up some features. That makes us dial-up dinosaurs have to wait.

I didn't know that Wendell. Good luck in the move. It's pretty quick now so once you get things moved over then we may be here before we even click...;-)

I don't think so. Or maybe i did, too. (Your reply to the original post seemed quite reasonable.)

Bill

I got a feeling that if typical web designers designed cars instead, they would get 2 miles/gallon and have a top speed of 5 mpg. They just count on Moore's law to make the computers useable.

Or, you'd push on the brake pedal and get a message "We're sorry but that function is not currently available. Please try again later".

Quote of the day,

yeah, in no way is it a rag against my dad. as said by someone else, other websites' scripts and fancy flash is replaced here by html, which loads quicker - note, a lot less busy than cnn's site. and there's no way anyone can say anything against cnn getting a lot more traffic than beerleg and be serious about it.
