Pitfalls of P & R
Are you playing victim, hoping your conduct has been deleted?
This whole thing is silly. If you don't like it turn it off or don't read it. I'm not much into baseball, but I haven't complained about it. Jeez, if you don't like it ignore it. P & R can be enjoyable and informative. Choose for your self.
Pitfalls of P & R
Wendell says he never deletes content, he archives it. I just wanted to post this because I thought you might find this information helpful.
The problem has always been
I'm not sure what you are talking about map..."Banks and wall street"?????
I'm merely pointing out that perhaps Wendell "owning" a P/R board is not really the solution as the same business issues will still be in play, just in a different forum. By making the board a "member owned club" where people buy/pay for memberships it creates a revenue stream for Wendell, gives people a stake and a say in how the club is run and hopefully lifts the liability for content off of Wendell's shoulders.
It seems like an idea worth considering. Whether or not Wendell agrees is someting only he can comment on. I'm merely making the suggestion.
The problem has always been
This went sideways in a post I started, about GOP debate. Someone referred to Cain as a Uncle t. Several commented we don't need racism, and condemned comment. We all get punished for the racist.
Sounds like a lot of work, Eric
> Watching P&R alone would seem like just about a full time job. How much income is in that?
Zilch.
> But the only way to identify the posts and users in need of deletion is to read each and every post made. It would take hours to do, and then constant vigilance to stay on top of.
EXACTLY. You hit the nail on the head.
> If enough forum users were sending emails Wendell on all of the posts which break the rules, I'm sure it would help immensely, but only if the emailers could properly discern between posts that break the rules and those they simply don't like. If he's flooded with "I don't like what ______ said in the ______ thread and I want it deleted" type emails, then it just becomes another level of babysitting.
Yep. It very often goes something similar to this, via email:
User: Please remove John Doe's message because he called me a name.
Wendell: Ok -- out of nearly 100,000 posts, is there any way you could help me out a little and tell me which post?
User: Sure. It was posted at 2:11pm.
Wendell: Um, link me.
User:
Wendell: Any chance you could get more specific?
etc......
Now add up all those little moments I'm dealing with for this one issue, spread out over the course of a day, maybe two or three. Now mix in several other concurrent issues with similar conversations. Now add in the fact that I'm trying to work on projects for my clients or look for paying work (which is more work than working). Now consider that I'd like to actually spend time with my family and have a life.
> Who has time for that?
Well, you know, if I made a decent wage doing this, yeah, I could see it. But since I don't...

Traffic seems to go up when P&R is off. That could be people showing up just to see if P&R is on yet or not, but then again, the average time spent on site is higher too, so they must be reading something interesting. The real test would likely be having it off for at least a week. I don't think I'm quite ready to do that just yet.
Sounds like a lot of work, Eric
That's funny you posted all that Wendell. I just discarded a lengthy post similar to all what you said!

P&R can be enjoyable IF people maintain the proper amout of RESPECT, good MANNERS and HONESTY. That was not the case on this site. (One poster here made statements here that he deemed NOT to be anti-semantic and then went on a rant an rave about the Jewish/Zionist powers destroying America. That's dishonest, disrespectful and just plain infantile.)
Politics and Religion are volitile subjects, but can be discussed by ADULTS with logic and RESPECT. The problem on this site appears to be that there are many folks over 21 that are not very adult in their demeanor or self expression.
These are usually the same people that scream about their RIGHT to free speech, but forget that their rights END where mine begin.
No Wendell, do NOT bring back P&R until some of these people grow up a bit, and that may be a LONG time. (And don't you find it kind of odd that someone from Mississippi would have to be the one to take such a stand against racism and anti-semitism? Perhaps a lot of peoples preconceived notions about Mississippi are in error?)

When you're ready, you have my support! Since something on my system doesn't allow me to keep P&R turned off, I find it a near-constant annoyance.

I have my browser set to keep me logged in (firefox). I've noticed that if I leave beerleg open in the background while I work, when I return to it P&R threads will have crept in. A simple refresh does not make them go away, but clicking on my beerleg bookmark reloads the site from scratch and gets rid of the P&R threads.
Add a "report" button, to reduce a lot of work.
Perhaps you could add a little button, near "link" on bottom right of each post, saying "report" or something like it. Then the exact post gets reported to you. (But allow folk to change their minds after accidentally clicking it!) Other forums have it. Of course, it may be a lot of up-front work to set it up...
BTW, i'm not advocating keeping P&R -- the P&R for Surveyors site seems like the best alternative -- just suggesting something that could help everyone/where on this forum.
Insidious P&R cat
Same thing with me (what Jim & Stephen said). System often throws P&R back into the mix despite my preference setting. Annoying.
Let me guess, I'm missing something here.

Am I missing something here? Does just the sight of P&R thread titles appearing on your site idex page bug you THAT much? If so, brother, you have problems that a mere mortal such as Wendell will never be able to help you with. I mean what is it? "OH, GOLLY! There's another P&R thread and I'm gonna have to read it and it's REALLY going to annoy MEEEEEEEE!".
I don't understand people like you. Not dissing you, but jeebus christ! Do you HAVE to read P&R threads on your "system"? WHUT?! tha.......
Aww, never mind.
Take care,
Ed

Yes, I have thought about that. There's already a link button at the bottom right of each post, which is a "permalink" for each individual post. Right click and copy that link and you've got it in your clipboard, easy to paste into an email.

It was a test and the people have spoken that they don't like the format. I totally understand, but that is why it was a test -- to find out. I have other tricks up my sleeve and hope to revamp the P&R site again to another format, to see what the people think. The next test is a lot like this forum but a little bit modernized. It will still have a list of all topics on the main page like this forum, but in an updated format.
