Wendell,
I like this site. I like it a lot.
I've received valuable advice from many users on a wide variety of subjects.
As an emergency tech support, there is none better.
I find a camaraderie on these boards among my fellow professionals.
I am lifted by the pride we show in our work.
It is good.

It can also the bane of my existence. To be subjected to the overtly racist, demeaning and shear lunatic ravings of an out of control member who embarrasses your work in hosting this site and our little community of professionals is becoming intolerable for me. It can literally f-up my whole morning.

I need an ignore button.
Please.
Is there just not some way to facilitate this? I’ve seen it on almost every other board I visit. Even Pokerstars has one.
I would trade all the “like” buttons in the world and double that number in emoticons for the ability to ignore the one user out of 700+ who pleasures himself by using this board as an outlet for his twisted and frankly, often frightening views. There are places for that. Is this it?

Thanks for your work here and for listening.
JB

JB,

I totally understand. It is one of the many feature requests on the table. I'm working desperately to develop new features that people want in the background while I take on other tasks to maintain a stable income.

For what it's worth, I know which person you are talking about. But let me say this: For every person that wants him gone when he's here, there's another person wanting him back when he's gone. As you can imagine, that puts me in quite a quandary.

So yes, an ignore feature is planned, but unfortunately it's not a quick, easy feature to install. Just know that it is on the table and will be here as soon as humanly possible. For now, I could suggest you turn off the P&R category in your profile, since we make sure to put such topics there as soon as we catch them. I realize that means you don't see any topics in P&R, but for now that may be the best solution.

This Is How That Other Site..........

..........got so screwed up.

Just forget him.....he is what he is and nothing, no banning, chastising or protesting is ever going to change it.
To some he's a hero....to some he's a jerk.

JUST DON'T CLICK ON A POST THAT HAS HIS NAME ON IT......it's as simple as that.

Think about it....no one outside of the profession (or very few) is going to click on a site named "beerlegs" or "surveyorconnect", so it's not a "public image" problem.

You already have an "ignore" button......it called keeping your finger raised instead of pressing down on the mouse.

Frankly, I fail to see the fascination people on here have with this guy.........if we're both talking about the same person.;-)

Good point. For the record, this site is purposely marketed only to our profession, so it is highly unlikely that the general public would even sign-up. Even if they visit the site, they will only see surveying-related topics; they would have to actually register in order to see anything else. This is on purpose, so that Google and other search engines will only index topics specific to surveying, thus attracting actual land surveyors.

Another point I should make is that he has been banned a couple of times and then let back in... that won't happen much more before I ban him permanently. This goes for anyone that chooses to spam the forum or abuse it in any way.

If you turn off P&R, you won't see him.

FWIW, he's one of my favorite posters. Not for his content, but because he's brazen and don't give a rip who he makes mad. You have to admire that ability to stand and say what you're convicted about.

That and he's crazy, and I like crazy.

However, I would submit that if his postings will eff up your morning, switch to decaf bro.

Never Understood the Attraction

"......brazen and don't give a rip who he makes mad" translates into other character descriptions that are not so wonderful.

As comedy....sometimes. Taken seriously: Never.

Never Understood the Attraction

More often than not, I just do not open up threads when I ascertain certain contributors. On occasion, I will sometimes open up a thread out of curiosity, and might find something amusing. In general, ignoring certain postings seems wise to me.

Because of that philosophy, I really have no complaints.

How's that for ambivalence?

Angelo

I only agree with him about half the time. He's still okay in my book. Some of you folks should lighten up.

FWIW, I've made application with Mr. Harness to have him put back in. I realize that Wendell is trying to "appease the masses" and that eventually, he will be gone forever. It will be a loss. I feel that he does bring something to the table. You sometimes have to read between the lines to see it.

There are some folks here who hack me off to no end. I typically don't read or interact with those folks. Does that mean that they should be banned? No.

The folks who hack me off, I'm sure I hack them off, but none of us have tried (to my knowledge) to get the other banned.

GAWD! I wish you would just GO AWAY! ...Not really, but please, this is a public forum that was not, I don't think, designed for you specifically. WTF?

Do what ever you do with that voodoo you do, Wendell. I'll be happy. But, jeez, some people. I will not ever wish for a job such as your's. You do it well, too.

Take care,
Ed

To be clear, I am not requesting that anyone be banned, barred or excluded from sharing his/her opinions. I just would like to be able to browse a subject that I enjoy without having to see the rantings of ONE individual.
For me to hit the "ignore" button would only block that person's postings from my view. This is a common feature of many online forums.
You all can enjoy his comments to your hearts desire.
Thanks for your interest.

Everybody is entitled to their own opinion.

While I can understand your personal feelings about other posters, I fail to see a need to burden Wendell and Angel for a solution when you already have the solution.

There are a couple of posters who when I see their name, I simply bypass that post. And if I do happen to read one of their posts, I still can make the decision to reply or to blow it off.

In short, don't sweat the small stuff.

Tim, you are behind times. Don't you know that everyone needs to be protected from everything and the days of doing it yourself are gone. A bit old fashioned myself.

That appears to be TOO much for some folks to handle.

Everybody is entitled to their own opinion.

That's the solution that works for me too. Sometimes I'm in the mood to read things that are likely to irritate me, sometimes not but the mouse is a powerful tool.

Everybody is entitled to their own opinion.

COULD MOI BE THE PERSON OF DISCUSSION HERE--I WOULD GUARANTEE IF THERE WERE TWO BUTTONS TD AND JB--THE LATER WOULD BE USED MORE TIMES THAN THE FORMER--

MY VIEWS ARE BASED ON A LIFETIME OF EXPERIENCES, SOME GOOD SOME BAD --ALL VALID--

THE COMPLAINERS MUST BE THE PARENTS OF THE CHILDREN THAT TEACHER IS SPEAKING ABOUT-

THE WORLD AS YOU HAVE SEEN IT IS FAILING AND FAILING BAD, MY FIXES I SUGGESTED WOULD FIX OUR CONDITION--WE GOT HERE FROM FOLKS LIKE THE ONES BESMERCHING MY OPINIONS, ISN'T IT OVERLY OBVIOUS THAT NEAR EVERYTHING WE HAVE DONE AS A NATION AND A PEOPLE IS "WRONG"--YOU PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE HAS BEEN STOLEN FROM ALL OF US AND THERE ARE THOSE THAT STILL PLAY "NICEY -NICE" AND SING CUM-BYE-YA--THE I'M OK -YOUR OK LIFESTYLE IS BOGUS-

WENDELL- NOTICE ITS THE SAME CROWD THAT DAMNS MY OPINIONS THAT STAY AND PLAY THE STATUS QUO--THEY OFFER NOTHING THERE LIKE DEAD CATS--

LOOK AT MY POSTS IGNORE THE IGNORAMOUSES THAT POO-POO EVERYTHING THAT EVOKES CHANGE OR A DIFFERENT VIEW, SEE THROUGHT THEIR SMOKESCREEN AND FOCUS ON THE RESPONDERS --THE THINKERS THAT SEE THE TRUTH AND AT THE VERY LEAST CAN AFFIRM THAT WE SEE THE SAME TRUTHS. SOME AGREE OR AT LEAST AGREE IN PART, THEY "CONTRIBUTE" AGAIN MORE THAN THE CRYBABIES--NOT UNLIKE THE GRANDSTANDERS IN EGYPT THAT WHEN FOLKS WERE GETTING SHOT AND RUN OVER BY THEIR GOVT HID IN THE ALLEYS LIKE COWARDS WHILE THOSE WITH BALLS AND FREEDOM OF SPEECH IN THEIR HEARTS STAYED THE COURSE AN WON THE FREEDOM THAT THE LACKEYS NOW INHERIT-THE SIMILARITIES ARE ASTOUNDING--THIS NIS WHY AS A NATION WE ARE AT THE END OF OUR ROAD--

THE RIGHT TO CONTRIBUTE THOUGHTS AND IDEAS IS ENORMOUSLY IMPORTANT IN OUR SOCIETY AS WELL AS THE FREEDOM TO SPEAK GOOD OR BAD ON ANY SUBJECT THE PROBLEMS COME WHEN ONE SIDE IS STIFLED, THAT FEEDS REVOLUTION, NOT BECAUSE REVOLUTION WON'T HAPPEN BUT BECAUSE MEANINGFUL EXCHANGES OF THOUGHT AND IDEAS WILL INSURE A BETTER GOVT THE SECOND TIME AROUND-

SO WENDELL, GIVE THE CRYBABIES THEIR NO PR OR NO TDD BUTTON THEY REQUEST WE ALL WILL BE BETTER OFF NOT HEARING THEIR SAME OLD, SAME OLD --LETS CALL IT "THEIR PACIFIER BUTTON" PERHAPS YOUR SKILLS CAN PLAY CUM-BYE-YA IN THE BACKGROUND --OOPS GOTTA GET BACK TO BECK--TDD

What's the big deal? If reading a post you don't agree with could potentially ruin your day, simply don't read it- messed up day averted.
It is a freedom thing. Can't people make a decision to read or not read something w/o a special button? ...Or just accept the fact that it is one person's opinion

...and for what its worth, I didn't read anything racist on the board today.
