Hi everyone,
I recently started with a new employer and upon arriving to this worksite they already had a permanent base set up. This base station includes a Trimble R7, a zephyr antenna and a TDL450H for radio. What we are seeing is that for some reason, the GLONASS is not being used by the R7 and I cannot figure out why that might be.
Also, we are using Trimble R10 as the rover with Trimble Access (2013.20).
Does anyone know how we can get the GLONASS to work from this setup?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Brian
It could be several things.?ÿ What firmware are you running on the R7??ÿ What model Zephyr are you using??ÿ Not all Zephyr antennas are able to receive GLONASS signals.
@fairleywell Not all Zephyr antenna's are able to receive GLONASS? I will have to go up to the base station this afternoon and take another look.
?ÿ
?ÿ It looks like this.
Also, if you don't mind, how would I check the firmware? (I would guess I need to bring it back to the office and plug it in to the computer?)
Thanks in advance,
Brian
Trimble has put out at least three versions of both the Zephyr (now referred to as the "Rover") and the Zephyr Geodetic (now referred to as the "Base"). The Geodetics are the large-diameter dishes.
If I remember correctly, the Model 2s were the first to incorporate GLO. Check on the underside of the antenna and you will get a model name and number. Search for the model number on the Trimble site and you should get the datasheet.
You would definitely have to connect the R7 receiver to a computer to check the firmware, but I am fairly certain that it can make use of GLO signals. You just need an antenna that will receive them.
@rover83 thank you for your insight. I am going to go look under the Zephyr this afternoon and see what I can find. Do you know if there are Zephyr's that do not use GLONASS? I couldn't find anything online about it, that is why the first picture was so strange to me when I received it on my time off.
Brian
Update - It is indeed a Zephyr Geodetic Model 2
Brian
OK, the Model 2 supported GLONASS, so I would next check the R7 receiver itself.
There was an "R7 GPS" receiver, a.k.a. the R7 Model 1, that did not support GLO. They usually came with the Zephyr Geodetic Model 1, because there's no point in using a Model 2 if the receiver couldn't utilize GLO. They're about twenty years old.
The "R7 GNSS" a.k.a. R7 Model 2 did support GLO, and was packaged with the Zephyr Geodetic Model 2.

I suspect that the base receiver is a Model 1, which essentially turns your R10 into a twenty-year-old GPS-only rover...which was outdated a decade ago.
I'd have a talk with whoever is running that base and let them know that their setup is going to keep your gear from performing like it was designed to.
Also be aware that if you tapped "yes" on the prompt in the OP, your survey style has been changed. You will need to re-enable Glonass the next time you are connecting to a base that it broadcasting Glonass.
As per screenshot in the ?ÿfirst post it may be that the wrong antenna is selected in the survey style. Try with Changing Zephyr Geodetic in Zephyr Model 2 for Base.
@rover83 thank you for your response. I will go check the R7 tomorrow and let you know what I find out.
@christ-lambrecht thank you for your response. I noticed this today when I got back to the office. I am going to go up there tomorrow morning to go through everything once again. I will keep you posted!
Brian, I got an email that said I had the following PM:
Hey Brad,
I saw you had viewed my topic from earlier today about R7/Zephyr and GLO sats. Do you have any insights to the issue we are having?
Thanks,
But, when I login here I do not see the PM anywhere. ?ÿMaybe Wendell will enjoy chasing down this gremlin.
Regarding your post, sorry, I am zero help. ?ÿMerely lurking. ?ÿBest of luck to you.
@brad-ott Hey Brad,
Sorry about that. Since time was somewhat important I was reaching out to various people who were viewing the topic. I did not realize there was a "limit" on people you could contact. So I had to delete some of the messages that I had sent.
@christ-lambrecht This was it! It had been correct in our survey style we use for the rover, but wasn't correct in the one used to connect to the base (which I never did since I started). We now have GLO sats!!!
Update - We now have GLONASS! Thanks to everyone who responded.
The survey style used to connect to the R7 must not have had the right antenna selected originally. When someone changed it to the right one, they must not have reconnected to the R7 but simply just changed the setting. I changed it to the wrong antenna, connected to R7 and then to the correct antenna and connected to the R7 again and it worked!
What a change this will be for our remote work site. We will go from having 6-7 sats at times to well above 10 all the time.
I cannot thank everyone enough for their help!
Brian
