Is it possible, without special software, for the end user to update a Trimble R10 receiver's firmware warranty update? If so, how is it done? I have purchased the reinstatement for $1,268, and have the paper work, showing a password (for the update?).

Many thanks for any help

Background: (For those who have a need to know why you aren't getting the dealer involved anytime you come on this site and ask these kinds of questions....)

(In 2018, while visiting a Trimble store in the big city, I purchased a Hardware & Firmware Reinstatement for an R10. However, it never occurred to me to ask the dealer to install the reinstatement onto my R10. As an old Leica GPS/GNSS user, for the past 25 years I have always been the one to handle such matters, so I left the Trimble store figuring I would be the one to take care of the firmware issues. And, since the Trimble dealer never brought it up (ie loading the new warranty date onto the R10), I presumed it was something the end user would do.

Now, 3 years later, and needing to load updated firmware onto the R10, I am stuck with the old warranty date on the R10, and with no way to install new firmware since the ƒ??programmedƒ? warranty date presently in the receiver is like 2014 there abouts.

I contacted the dealer, and all he will do is tell me to bring the R10 in, and his tech will make the date change. He refuses to try to tell me how to do it, and it is a 100 mile drive to the store. Also, it is completely all the way on the far side of a large city, and at my age I have no desire to attempt to make the drive. I also can not ship the receiver to the dealer as we use this R10 daily, and it would stop work on some projects.

I have spent many minutes doing google searches, and have been unable to find any information on how to change the warranty dates in the R10.)

Attach your R10 to your computer or DC with a cable and run Trimble Installation Manager.?ÿ When it opens it defaults to updating Access, but on the left there's a tab where you can select Receiver and it will run you through the process to connect. It should pick up the serial number of the R10 and know the warranty date and allow you to update to the most recent version that you are entitled to.

I went to the dealer for the R10-2 upgrade to the R12 engine because I'd heard it was more complex than normal.?ÿ All other updates I've completed myself.

Your rep needs to do a better job.?ÿ This is not complicated. Its just a simple firmware update, and if they can't do it over the phone or internet, ask them if they are willing to pay for your time to drive it down and return or send you a loaner for the time it takes to ship it back and forth.?ÿ?ÿ

Not all Trimble reps are equal I suppose.

@stephen-ward Thanks for replying Stephen,

Just made the connection again with TIM, and once again (as always before) it says the latest release (which is already on it) for my R10 is 5.22. This (5.22) was already on the unit before I even went to the dealer and purchased the Hardware Firmware Reinstatement on August 30, 2018.

It seems that TIM is simply reading the old warranty date that was/is saved in the R10, rather than picking up on the new warranty date that I purchased and should be entitled to, from some Trimble online database of serial numbers.

With TIM I just keep going around in circles. It seems there is no way for TIM to realize I now have a new warranty date which should allow me to get firmware released 1 year past August 30, 2018 (ie like about August 30, 2019).

I'm thinking I should be entitled to firmware 5.48 or maybe even 5.50.

Is there any way to make TIM understand that I have since purchased a warranty date that goes several years past what TIM believes I have?

Once again, thanks for your offer to help.

?ÿ

Trimble Installation Manager reports "Firmware maintenance expiry: July 2015"

This date is actually incorrect due to the fact I made the purchase on August 30, 2018.

Somehow, someway there has to be a way to program the new firmware maintenance date into the R10, or else TIM is never going to allow updating beyond 5.22 (which is very old firmware).

@i-ben-havin My gut feeling?ÿ is that your dealer dropped the ball on the upgrade. Every trimble device I have phones home to trimble to check the warranty date before allowing you to upgrade?ÿ the software.?ÿ I'm guessing that they failed to link the serial number of your R10 to the updated warranty in Trimble's database.?ÿ

The USB dongle for TBC is the only Trimble device I have where the warranty update comes with a 19 digit number to put into the dongle to update the warranty status.?ÿ

You might try logging into the R10 through its Webui or get the winflash utility from trimble website.?ÿ Both procedures are covered in the owners manual and might give you access to a place to put in the upgrade password.?ÿ

I'll reach out to my dealers tech tomorrow to see if there's a way to do it.

The vendor you bought the firmware warranty from should give you all the assistance you should need.?ÿ

@robertusa They will, if I want to take a day off from work, take the equipment (out of productive work for the day) with me, and find someone to drive me (at my age I shy away from driving in busy cities that I am not familiar with or am not use to driving in) to their office 100 miles away on the other side of a rather large city.?ÿ

I am only asking here because the dealer refuses to tell me how to do it, and I can not afford to lose the unit's production that shipping it to them would cause.?ÿ

@stephen-ward The password (code) for the firmware warranty update is 24 characters long. But, I have no idea what to do with it.

Try running the 5.15 version of WinFlash and entering your warranty extension code as an Option. You should then be able to check the warranty date with WinFlash's 'Verify Receiver's Options'.?ÿ

Once that is done, TIM will take care of the firmware. On a R12 TIM will also allow you to enter the option, but I don't think it works on the R10.

I think...
