Check out this (long overdue) blog post from our Geodetic and Control Surveys class... I would really like to develop/expand this experiment to include multiple locations/observations in the future. Let me know if you have ideas!

With this information they were able to calculate a circumference of 24,383 feet. The value they calculated is similar to a currently accepted value of the earth’s circumference at the equator of 24,901 miles.

Well done and Dan R is a good man.

Cool quote from the article

“Next we will create a triangulation network similar to the method used from the late 1700s through the 1900s,” said Ness. “Surveying is a profession that will forever be tied to the past.”

True from so many different angles.

Kelly,
Thanks for the shout-out. Was happy to get out of the cubical and into the sunshine.
You might contact Dr. Dennis and see if his program would like to participate:

John C. Dennis, Ph.D
Assistant Professor of Surveying
School of Forest Resources, Rm. B105
University of Arkansas – Monticello
110 University Court
Monticello, AR. 71656

Let me know when you are planning another set of 'observations' and I'll do my best to see a shadow.
