I will be taking my OPUS Project Managers Training class next week in Rolla. I am looking forward to it -kind of excited actually. SWMBO got glassy eyed when I tried to explain the class and how cool it's gonna be.?ÿ Curious to hear from others who have been through the course and how they apply the knowledge and projects to their practice. Thanks.

I took it at Mississippi State back in 2014. It was a great class. I learned a lot. I have never used OPUS projects on a real project, but the theory and experience of processing the vectors from their data sets was very educational. I definitely understand post processing much better than I used to.

If you can, I would suggest having your laptop, and then possibly a tablet to look at the PDF files, or you can see if you can get the material before hand, and have it printed out. It will keep you from having to swap between windows.

I've thought about taking it again via the webinar option. It would be a great refresher on static processes. Yes, I am old school and still use static for control on our projects when applicable.

The class was pretty good, I wish I'd have been more educated about session processing vs. single baseline processing when I attended it a few years back. I still prefer to process and adjust in TBC but I use OPUS Projects quite a bit for large networks, especially if the regional CORS are inconsistent, and for projects that have to be repeatable from one year to the next. On large control networks I'll usually make a spreadsheet showing the coordinates and deltas between O/P, TBC unadjusted, TBC free adjustment, and TBC fully constrained adjustment, and make sure there are no outliers. TBC fully constrained will always reflect the inconsistency of the CORS.

Per Jimmy's comment above - you definitely want your laptop, and hopefully will have access to WiFi.

Thanks for input. I have the training material printed out and I will bring my laptop. They also have already emailed me the files to download.?ÿ

?ÿ

Really looking forward to the class - sounds like my brain may be a little sore though.

Yes, it will be somewhat overwhelming, but very good. Make sure to have a notepad as well. You have to have access to WiFi, as the processing is done on the NGS servers if I remember correctly. When I took the class, there were a few files that we were sharing thumb drives for some data, but that was a long time ago, and it was some specific projects that the instructor was giving unique situations. It was one of the first classes if I remember correctly. I am sure it is a little more streamlined now. Seems like the swapping between windows was on those projects off of the thumb drives that we did not have printed out.

You will learn a lot about GPS in general, but especially static and processing.

It was well worth the time investment for me.?ÿ I've used OPUS-P for about a dozen projects since I took the training a few years ago.

Brian Ward, NGS and Steve Corley, USACE presented our OPUS Projects Managers training in May 2014.

I've teamed up with a few local surveyors and did a few 'test runs'.

The class was great and full of tons of info. OPUS Project is a really cool tool that really seems to do quite a bit - glad I took the course.
