There is a geodesist position vacancy at the NGS facility in Corbin, Va. It is a ZP-1372-3 (equivalent to GS 1112). Salary indicated to be $72K to $112K; I assume this means start at lower with maximum at that grade level the higher number.

Applications start today 17 Aug and end 30 Aug.

Corbin is/was a lovely rural location south of Fredericksburg, Va. I haven’t been there since the early 2000s. This is the site of their Training Center and home to the Instrumentation and Methodologies Branch. Some extracts from the vacancy announcement follow:

Its still a rural area and nice for sure. Also i will mention this I dont work there but federal salary is just part of it.  You get cost of living on top of that base salary. So can go higher. I also believe a cartographer position is open as well. Don’t let the name fool ya it will probably be more geodetic stuff than cartographer related .  I will say its a great place to work good people.  Again i don’t work there. But i lived on site for a while. With the brains of the family.

I don’t keep track of cartographer jobs. Not that there are any problems with cartographers. Some of my best friends are cartographers. Well not that many…

Glad to hear suburban development has not (yet) reached Corbin. I have fond memories of the area and the folks working there.

The following link describes geomagnetic activities at the site and some history:

Well some development is getting close but since Corbin abuts to FT A.P. Hill it keeps it as a very nice place to work.  When we first got married we rented one of the old govt houses. I told my wife she was extremely lucky to work there. It’s getting close to the camp out bon fire soon. Covid kinda nixed some of that. If my wife was not already my boss at home I would think seriously about the job offers. But she bosses me around at home and so I figure that’s enough lol. They have a new edm baseline built. And the robot absolute antenna calibration thing as well. Gravity studies are still being done I believe.  Not sure. I did mess up once and drove to the back once and they had to let them know I went to close to that building.  Some new faces but everyone is just great people to be around. Except my wife lol. Just kidding. She is great.

Oh wow . I did not know they were renaming the base. I guess i have had my head stuck in the sand lately.

From my perspective and being married to someone that works on site I believe it would be a great work environment. I am sure it has cons at times but every single person i have interacted with has always been very courteous and such. My wife never complains. She worked at headquarters way before we met. She took the chance and moved to Corbin at some point. I think she made the best decision ever. When we first met she was living downtown F’burg. I am a very lucky man. I miss some of the pros of working for the government. But I have enjoyed so much re learning and also learning new things on the private sector side. I do miss living out on the site though. Standing on the front porch watching the wife walk to work lol. I once after a deep snow shoveled a path for her to walk to the office lol.

I can’t keep up lol. All the renaming is going to cause confusion for U.S. veterans as we try and discuss old times with future veterans. We all might be put in a place they think we have lost our minds as we will refer to the old names and geographical locations and the new veterans will say well they have lost their marbles time to place them somewhere for their own protection lol.
