Recently purchased a Topcon SRL-35 radio to work with our Carlson Brx5 Base/Rover and our topcon hyper lites. Now bare with me please I know some things but nowhere near how much I see here. It's been up to me to figure this out stuff out.

I asked for a Satel Easy Pro 35w as I've seen documentation of it working with the BRx5 units. Salesman said, no the topcon was the same, but was a better radio. So the company bought topcon. Discussion for another time.

I have gotten the radio to work with the Carlson units but not the topcon hiper lites. I'm really unsure of my settings. So I will tell you what I have as a setup.

BRx5 Base
Radio type - Satel 35W (I see no selection for a Topcon 35w of any kind. Remember they are the same smh....)
Message type - RTCM 3.0
Protocol - TRIMTALK
Modulation - locks out Grey can't select anything.
Position rate - 1hz
DGPS - All and 30s
Channel Spacing - 12.5
Power - 35w
FEC - off
Repeater - off

BRx5 Rover
Message type - Auto (locked can't change)
Radio Mode - TRIMTALK(1)
Position rate - 1hz
DGPS - None

That setup works, but I feel it can do better I'm not sure yet as I don't know what any of those settings really mean. The other options I have are:
BASE
Message types - CMR and ROX
Protocol - PDL w/ EOT or Satel
Modulation - GFSK or 4FSK

ROVER
Radio Mode - PC1 (FEC ON), PC3 (FEC3 OFF), PC5 (PEC ON), PC6 (PEC OFF), TRIMTALK(1), AND TRIMTALK(2).

Biggest question is, am I gonna kill a GPS unit or the radio. Then can I improve my settings with the options I have. The joke has been have you blown it up or lit it on fire yet. Its been nope but I need to know what I'm doing is ok and what it all means. So here's hoping for some info.

That radio is made by Satel, sold by Topcon.

Not sure why you'd want to use "TRIMTALK" for the protocol. That is a trimble format. Most use PDL or Satel formats. At 35w the radio does produce a lot of heat, so keep it cool. Why do you need it that high? Try 5w. You also will need an FCC license. So if it you don't burn it up, you may be fined $8000 per day from FCC.

I'm only using trimtalk because it's the only one I could get to work.

I've tried using the PDL w/ EOT and satel protocol. Base and radio communication is fine, but the Rover doesn't pick up anything when using those protocols.

We do have our FCC license and have it set to operate within the assigned parameters.

For the 35w it only ran that way cause everytime I changed the protocol it would default back to 35w. I got caught with excitement when I saw my rover pick up the radio and fix. I have the options 10, 20 and 35w. Yesterday I ran at all three power levels and didn't notice a difference for what I was doing. The intended plan is to run at 10w all the time.

When we bought the radio the sales rep "programmed" the radio. He asked for my GPS units. So my main intention for radio was for the BRx5 units. I brought those to him and he said no topcon. So I got topcon. Wouldn't touch the BRx5 units.

Is it possible that I need to program that radio to run a PDL or Satel protocol with BRx5 units?

BTW this radio I have not gotten to work with my topcon units.

The Hiperlite and Hiperlite+ receivers have spread spectrum radios . The Srl35 is Digital UHF. They are not compatable

They were "upgraded" before my time to the digital UHF. What I've been told is this is the bandaid fix to the narrow banding. I'm relaying what I've been told and they are suppose to "work" with this radio. That's about all the info I have on those receivers.

I started here with the guys using the Carlson units not operating at full potential due to the settings being wrong and they had Glonass turned off and they wondered why they only ran with 6/8 satellites. Well I fixed that and they got all excited. Now I fix everything. So maybe I'm asking the wrong questions, looking in the wrong places, I dunno.

I have never used the Carlson GNSS receivers, so can't help you there. For Topcon receivers and radios you should be using TRU (Topcon Receiver Utility) to connect to each topcon radio and match the settings. On the Hipers be certain to tell TRU the radio are internal on Com Port C .

Awesome and thank you! Monday morning when I return to the office I'll be sure to look for that.
