I bought this off ebay for $175, (shipped). I had no idea there were at least two sizes of this style tripod. I have a Kern DKM Goniometer I bought from Dan P. in NJ and it requires a smaller mounting mechanism. This tripod is in excellent condition except for the paint chips.
Would prefer to trade for what I need, but will sell for what I paid or if you have one you would sell PM me a price.

You appear to have the smallest Kern theodolite, either the DKM-1 (or DK-1) theodolite- for this you need to the Kern Tripod # 171 or #173. See the following link for a photo of it. You can wait to see if one shows up on Ebay, or try Mr. Urs Reinhardt at Swisstek.com.

The tripod that you have is for the larger instrument, the DKM-2.

An excellent website for photo-documentation of several brands of surveying instruments is the Picasa Web album of Maptack:

The entry for the DKM-1 tripod is at:

Here's the page from the 1954 Kern catalog describing the DKM-1 tripod, compliments of Mr. JÌ?rg Dedual, of the Wild-heergrugg.com website:

The instrument I have is a DKM2 and is the small instrument, really cute little thing it is.

The first and last could be it. There are at least two different sizes of that style tripod. Could you lay a metric scale on the top and get a picture?

@vern these are 3 different ones, but I hadn't taken any pictures of that last one with the cap off of it. (actually I didn't know it was a cap!) I know I didn't put the metric side to the last one, so if you need me to add any more, let me know!

@vern I may have just jumped the gun on these tripods. I have some equipment that actually goes with these. I am not a surveyor and have no idea what some of this is specifically, but it's coming together and making more sense!

That last tripod is not what I need but it quite unique. I've never seen anything like it.

Monica,
The 1st tripod is definitely for any of the regular Kern theodolites (DKM-1, DKM-2, DK-2, DK-RT) with the Kern system of mounting.

The 2nd tripod is for the Kern GK-1 Kern level.

The 3rd tripod is also a Kern tripod, but it has a different mounting system- which was used with many of the more modern theodolites using a 5/8 thread (most modern theodolites use this type, as well as some Kern theodolites which could be ordered with this version- the Swiss company Wild Heerbrugg (which became Leica and in 1988 bought out Kern) used this as their standard and it became the industry norm for the most of the world-wide instrument manufacturers in the 1960's-1970's). Kern and Zeiss were the outliers, to some extent in that they each had different systems that were incompatible with Wild.

This 3rd tripod with the cover (that has 2 level vials set at 90å¡ (right-angled) to each other) may be the tripod for the Kern compass tacheometer- to utilize the compass accurately you would need to level the tripod head prior to use. From the pictures of the Kern compass tacheometer it seems like it may have been adapted to use this 5/8 thread system- but I can't be sure until I see a picture of the bottom mount.

Either way, I would be interested in purchasing the compass tacheometer and which ever tripod seems meant to go with it- - I've sent a private message and replied in the other forum posting titled " Need help identifying" also.

I have set all the pieces with their tripods and taken some pictures. Very interesting seeing these puzzles coming together! @NDrummond thank you for your information! I did get them matched up. Very interesting! @vern I also have 2 other tripods that I don't have matched up to anything specifically. I'll send you some pictures. They look more adjustable to something!

It may be too late for you but this instrument will only fit a Kern tilting-head tripod family (telescopic-leg tripod type 181B/ fixed-leg type 171A for the DKM-1) according to the base star plate shown in the photo of the Dkm-1 as configured.

For your information - The tripod you got on eBay is type 173H & will take the DKM-1 if you remove the 19mm adapter on the star plate on the base of the DKM-1. If you look there is a 19x1 mm threaded adapter which is easily removed from the star plate by removing the grub screw which secures it. This adapter ring surrounds the centering collar on the base. The tilting-head tripod was the forerunner to the centring tripod back in the early 1950's.?ÿ

For those who may be interested -the DKM-1 will fit centring tripods 171&173 whilst types K1-A, K1-RA, DK-RT, DK-RV,K1-S,K1-M, DKM-2(&A) etc will fit all three tripods of the centering tripod family -the 171,173 & the large tripod 174H (&174A -fixed) which is designed for the DKM-3 (&A). The DKM-3 will fit the 173 with some overhang.?ÿ

With regard to the Tilting-head tripod there was three different sizes small, medium and large headed similar to the range of the Centring Tripods.

@maptack

Hi you don't have a photo of the underside of aluminium centering head (to take a DKM2) as I am trying to figure out what's missing from a set of legs I have found. The small 'release button?' On the centering isn't pushing against anything.

Thanks

@vern?ÿ

If you remove the internal adapter ring who is inside your tribrach you could fit it to your tripods head
