I recently picked up a Hilger & Watts No. 2 Vernier Theodolite that dates from 1974.?ÿ Excellent condition.?ÿ I'm not an expert, but everything appears to work as designed.?ÿ Very clean, controls move easily and smoothly.?ÿ SEE PHOTOS HERE.?ÿ $250 OBO.

I also have a Sokkisha-Leitz SDM3F06 Theodolite with Electronic Distance Measurement.?ÿ Took me a little while to figure out most of the functions.?ÿ As far as I can tell, it's operational!?ÿ I can focus on objects, and the vernier scales move as the body moves.?ÿ I had the unit on my window sill, looking out to test the long-distance focus, and had the EDM Tone switch set to On.?ÿ When the unit was square to the glass, I got a solid tone.?ÿ This (to me) would seem to indicate that the IR laser is emitting and being reflected back into the unit, producing the solid tone.?ÿ The side light is missing a spring that holds the top of the battery compartment down onto the batteries, but most hardware stores should have a replacement spring available.?ÿ The side light works.?ÿ The keyed control pad seems to work; I would press a different key and get a different display on the LCD.?ÿ The vernier scale can be seen in the photos.?ÿ Asking $400 OBO.?ÿ PHOTOS OF THE UNIT.

That Sokkisha is of an age where many of us already have one in the back of a closet taking up space. To good to let go of, not good enough to actually use, not old enough to be a collectors item.?ÿ ?ÿI think that your best market for that unit will be in 3rd world countries, where they sometimes still use that vintage for work. Ebay is probably your best bet.?ÿ

It is a shame that something that still appears to have all the original capabilities is of such little value now.?ÿ The Sokkisha would even be a step up from my GTS-2B in that it has calculation capability.?ÿ I wonder, though, do you have to read and then manually enter the vertical angle to do the reduction to horizontal??ÿ If it has the micrometer scale it probably doesn't electronically read the vertical angle.
I can't tell for sure in the pictures, does the tribrach have an optical plummet??ÿ If so, that might be the most valuable part of the kit, still interchangeable with most brands, and worth perhaps $40.?ÿ
Yup....you have to read the vertical angle and enter it on the keyboard. ?ÿI used one from 1989 to 1992. ?ÿFor stakeout it was always faster to just set a few strategic points with it then switch to a 20 second theodolite and 200 foot steel tape.?ÿ
The Guppy made by Topcon is a dinosaur compared to the SDM3F06.
I have the SDM3E05 and it has no bells and whistles like buttons to push, it is purely a theodolite with a built in EDM and only displays H&V angles to be dialed in with a micrometer to read minutes and seconds and displays slope distances along the line of sight.
That was the first instrument I owned that needed a battery. It is still as fine as it was when purchased and less of a hassel than any since. I could at least continue to turn angles when the battery died.
That looks like the original tribrach for the instrument- no optical plummet since there is an op built into the instrument-?ÿ
