I'm looking for another cane pole distributor for marsh surveys. My guy down in Houma, LA is out right now. Does anyone know of a place along the gulf coast I could get a few bundles of cane poles? I remember a guy in Alabama carried some but I can't find his contact info.

I've always gone back and reclaimed my stakes and such and leave post or a fiberglass driveway marker by monuments and along boundaries.
Why not reclaim the bamboo stakes and use them over and over, they last much longer than a pine kiln dried lath.
Mr. Surveyor I like the OP, survey in the marsh/swamp areas.?ÿ ?ÿ90% of the work involves pipelines, either locating one or staking one for construction and sometimes both, staking one for construction which might be paralleling an existing one.?ÿ ?ÿThe water level typically is less than a foot below ground to ponds where the water can be 5' or deeper.?ÿ Good ground will barely support a person walking and bad ground won't.?ÿ We use air boats or marsh buggies for transportation.?ÿ
The cane poles generally come in 16' and up in length, kiln dried and straight as an arrow.?ÿ When you need to mark a spot the poles are stabbed down until you feel they will stay.?ÿ Sometimes you will have 8' sticking out other times you will have 3'.?ÿ We are rarely able to recover them because the construction crews usually destroy them.?ÿ ?ÿIf the crews didn't destroy them it is too costly to recover because of air boat/marsh buggy rental etc. You would be spending $3,000 a day to recover $700 in cane poles that your client already paid for.?ÿ ?ÿ?ÿ
Have you ever used cheap PVC pipe? I get 10' lengths for $1.87 at Home Depot and I can cut them to what ever length I want...
I have used pvc pipe but not in the marsh or marsh.?ÿ 10' isn't long enough, we could shove it out of site.?ÿ ?ÿSometimes 16' isn't long enough so we tie "duck tape" two poles together.?ÿ Green bamboo won't work its too flimsy, it has to be kiln dried.?ÿ?ÿ
PVC also comes in 20ft lengths that have an expanded end to connect to the next joint.
We order cane poles by the hundreds, 3 or 4 hundred at a time would not be unusual.?ÿ ?ÿWhen riding in an air boat or marsh buggy space is at a premium and often will need to carry 100 poles at a time.?ÿ We can fit that many because of the small diameter of a cane pole.?ÿ Pvc pipe would be too bulky, although I have use it when only needing to stake a few spots.?ÿ
I find PVC tends to fill up with water and bend. Also, the cane poles will eventually rot away. I see some places with PVC in the marsh it just looks bad.
