I am gearing up to apply for my West Virginia surveyor's license. I have been looking for a list of references that would be helpful to prepare for the state specific exam. When I did the PA and NY exams the state associations provided a syllabus that was a big help, but I cannot locate such an list for West Virginia. Any help out there?

I think that Carl is licensed in West Virgina. Dave Ingram might be as well.

They may be able to help.

Good luck! I am back in test taking mode after 12 years. It is tough to get back in the grove of studying.

It has been 5 years since I took the WV test. I am pretty sure they send you a syllabus with your approval to sit for the exam. There may be one available on the Board's website or the WVSPLS website. Most of the references are available thru the WVSPLS at a discount if you join (well worth the price of joining). And then of course there are three words to know as far as the syllabus goes "COMPASS LAND SURVEYING" by Sipe, WV PLS # 1

Make sure you study "Compass Land Surveying" by Henry Sipe. Know your statutes/regs. Try to get your hands on a copy of the "orange book"; many of the statutes are outdated but it is full of relevant case law. I just took/passed it in April. Tough test, good luck.

Well... to your credit, you did remember some details... I went to school in WV (Glenville), but I am licensed in VA. It's all good though. 🙂 😀

"Compass Land Surveying" by F. Henry Sipe. It's a thin volume but tightly packed.

Henry and I had a lively conversation at dinner one night in Kentucky many years ago.

He was an amazing surveyor and had the rare ability of a mentor. I had worked all over West Virginia under the authority of one of his proteges.

He knew I was a Buckeye and invited me to just send over a plat of survey and the report with the application fee and he would send me my West Virginia license.

Now, you have to take the test and you need to know the book.

Good Luck!

Yes, I'm licensed in WV - but it was so long ago that I don't have a clue as to what the test looks like today.

BTW - I took the test in 1975.

I am looking to take the WV Exam next month (April 2017). Any new advice or recommendations? I have Sipe's book and have been studying the regs, anything else stand out?

Know tree identification by written word not pictures. If you think you are good with tree identification, and you need a tree ID book to compare photos you will be lost on their questions; know the written identifiers. Sipe's book is priceless .... Pay strict attention to magnetic declination and remember to pay close attention to what info you have and what info you need.

Best of luck!

I studied the state code that applies to surveying and studied the Sipes book. I took the test in 2001 so it could have changed since then.
