Can anyone offer any advice on what to study for the WV state-specific exam? Any references I may need? Thanks!
Compass Land Surveying by Sipe
"the Orange Book" laws are outdated but case law is relevant
DOT Drainage Manual
WV laws and regulations
Minimum standards
Boundaries in WV Roads and Streams
Exploring the Old Turnpikes of WV
There are more, that's just off the top of my head. I have been studying for it too; hoping to take it in April.
Just on a historical note, many years ago I had dinner a couple of times with F. Henry Sipe. We had some great conversations. I had a lot of experience in WV under the company owner who was licensed in OH, KY, and WV. At the end Henry said to me to just send him over a plat of survey and survey report that I had done in Ohio, along with the fee, and he would send me back my WV registration and certificate. Gosh, I wish I had done that.
It's true. "Compass Land Surveying" is a classic. So was Henry.
Definately study the "orange book". I skimmed thru it before I took the test the first time, not believing that the stuff would be on the exam. The seoond time I took the exam, I paid a lot more attention to that book.
Dave -- Wlll you be at the convention in two weeks? I am only coming on Saturday. Need my min standards and ethics.

I had to read that book at Glenville, I still have my copy somewhere. Dad picked up a copy in Morgantown that had a copy of a plat and a report of survey in it, I've got that somewhere too.
My dad had the same thing to say about Henry too. We would stop at his house once in a while when passing through Elkins.

Henry was called the "Father of Surveying" in WV. He was a fine gentleman and his book "Compass Land Surveying" is still well worth reading. He was license number 1 in WV and was the first Secretary of what was then called the "West Virginia Board of Examiners of Land Surveyors". He once said that: "Every surveyor has to eat crow now and then. It's when it becomes a steady diet that the Board takes an interest".
Neil I am still not sure whether I will be there or not. I had originally planned on being there but I have such a hectic schedule right now I just don't know. If I do make it, I will be there on Friday and Saturday. I will touch base with you before then and let you know for sure. As for now, I am about to hit the road to Little Rock to sit for the AR state exam tomorrow. Driving out today, testing in the morning then return trip right after. Gonna be a long couple days.

I like that. May have to steal it.
See you next week.

Can you all tell me more about the orange book? What is the title of the book, so I can try to find it online. In NC the "orange book" is published by the NC Geodetic Survey. I am going to the WV society's convention next weekend for the exam review- do you think I could find a copy of it there?

I am not sure. It is called "Compass Land Surveying" by Sipe. It is available on Amazon, but at very high prices. I would check with the WV Survey Society on their website to see if they have it available. When I took my exam, I borrowed a copy from a friend.
The Orange Book is out of print. It is a collection of statutes and case law. Find someone you know that has a copy and ask them if they would loan it to you. For Sipe's Compass Land Surveying, contact the WVSPS.
I think there is a new book, not Orange, prepared by Rick Sypolt of Glenville State College for the West Virginia Society of Professional Surveyors. You might check with them.
Any advice on how to get 1 of the 2 WV books above would be greatly appreciated- "Orange Book" by H. Sipe or the Case law book by Rick Sypolt.
I'm studying and also have been looking for WV case law for along time online with no success. I have just sent a message to WVSPS and Glenville State so hopefully they can advise on how to get them. Thanks.
