I am fasinated with the idea of going to Cuba. I play Conga's and am thinking of going down there on a music-cation but then I thought maybe I could go on a survey-cation. Does anyone know how the land system works down there? Do they have modern instruments?

Hopefully someone with actual knowledge will pipe up. Alternatively, do a search on the FIG site here: http://www.fig.net/index.asp

FIG is Federation Internatonal of Geometres (surveyors). Mr Hamilton who posts to this site and attends FIG meetings may have something.

Think the Castro's own all the land no need for a survey. Might have to go Spain to do the title research.

All available survey chariots were manufactured in the US prior to 1960.

That's what I was thinking - you'll be using a K & E mountain transit and a Lufkin tape.

I don't think other nations participate in the embargo...

Wait! The Evening News, etc. that have invaded Cuba in recent months only show vehicles of 1950's or earlier US manufacture being used. Are you suggesting that the media might be providing slanted views to the innocent American TV viewer? Surely they wouldn't provide us with anything but unbiased reporting.:-S:-S:-S:-S:-S

It isn't news, it's entertainment. If there are also more modern cars there showing them wouldn't be as romantic and entertaining.

@Holy Cow
@Bill93 First, let's look at the reality of Cuba. Despite advances in education and health care to citizens, it is s very poor country and has been for decades.
That's why athletes, musicians, and others defect.
The average Cuban does not own a car and probably never will own a car.
The Soviet era cars all went to government officials and their family. Chinese cars the same.
So when you see those street scenes, it is fairly accurate.
Musicians and artists from Louisiana who have travelled to Cuba on cultural visas say the old US cars are everywhere. They are family relics of the pre-embargo.
It is said that about a 1/3 of the cars on the island are vintage
If you are under the impression that the streets of Havana are similar to other cites of the Western Hemisphere, you are mistaken.
But it is fun to wear media bash blinders ....well it is sort of PC nowadays. Unfortunately news has become infotainment.
As for surveying, I would think that there will be a commercial construction boom for tourism.
I would think that Miami area surveying firms are ready to jump
on the work.

Today: "Tourism in Cuba is an industry that generates over 3 million arrivals per year, and is one of the main sources of revenue for the island." Wikipedia
mostly Canadians, but many Europeans too... not to mention the uncounted Americans that visit under the radar.
It is a US embargo, the US is not the center of the universe.

Over 3 million visitirs reflects a very healthy tourist economy. Can they sustain it? Will increase of touristas spoil the Cuban experience?

40yrs ago I was the proud owner of a 1953 Chevy stepside.
Leaded gas, recycled oil (new oil ran out of it), strong with 4speed granny transmission, top speed 60mph, would go anywhere in any weather.
More of a parade vehicle than an everyday ride.
Upgrade with modern motor and drive units and brakes and suspension and steering and it would be ready for today's road.

A little late to the game, but I had a Cuban working for me for a bit as a temp. Don't think that just because Cuba is poor that they are not well educated or in the stone age. This guy was a surveyor in Cuba and was very good. At the time he was working for me he was going back to university to get a second degree in GIS. His wife was doctor. He said that they both made the same wages while in Cuba. They defected while they were at a conference in Central America.

I had an employee many years ago that had worked in Cuba BEFORE the revolution. They were doing control work, and one of their theodolites was stolen. The cops picked up a few suspects, and extracted a confession from one and returned the instrument. I think that means they beat him until he confessed. True Story!

I have one Cuban friend, she is a lawyer here now and left when she was 5. Her parents still want nothing to do with Cuba, but I think she is curious about it enough to go back. And, a friend of mine from Luxembourg and his Mexican wife went there a year or two ago (before the "thawing" of relations). They did not like it at all.
