See if you can find comparable data for the State, or States, where you are working.

Since January 2020 there have been 270 Engineers receive licensure by passing the examination.?ÿ In the same period of time, seven Land Surveyors received licensure by passing the examination.

The Kansas State Board of Technical Professions covers Architects, Engineers, Geologists, Landscape Architects and Land Surveyors.?ÿ The current totals for individuals in each category are:?ÿ Architects--1823; Engineers--11989; Geologists--340; Landscape Architects--330 and Land Surveyors--540.?ÿ The current totals for Business Entities licensed in the same order are: 654; 1870; 78; 70; 540.?ÿ In the past year the total number of licensed individuals in all categories has dropped by 403 while the net increase in Business Entities is only 33.

The percentage of all license holders who reside in Kansas is as follows:?ÿ Architects--29; Engineers--31; Geologists--55; Landscape Architects--38 and Land Surveyors 47.

Such statistics are a reflection of much of the commentary here on SurveyorConnect about the current status and future status of the profession of Land Surveying.

Neglected to mention how the quarterly update provides information on recent disciplinary actions taken by the Board.?ÿ This time there were only two listed, but, both were against Land Surveyors.?ÿ Probably over 80 percent of those listed in recent years are actions against Land Surveyors.?ÿ What does that suggest about our Profession?

@stlsurveyor?ÿ

Especially when you consider the number who are both retired and inactive and those who maintain the license but haven't done any surveying in years.

Looks like the replacement rate for engineers and surveyors is 2.3% and 1.3% respectively, if we're including all licensees, not just the ones residing in state. Not that big of a difference.

I'd also be curious as to the average & median age of those who still retain an active license.

I got licensed in Kansas in 2021 because one of our corporate clients.?ÿ They have facilities all over the U.S. and had a situation at one of their facilities on the Missouri River that required a surveyor to complete a flood study and seal plans for the COE permitting. They wanted to use our company for all of their surveying needs, so subcontracting the work was out of the question. After I acquired my license, they scrapped the project.?ÿ

Although I intend on keeping my Kansas license current for the foreseeable future, I doubt that I will ever again have a need to survey in the state.?ÿ If I ever have the need to perform a survey in Kansas, unless I pull up stakes and move to the area, I will probably sub the work to a local surveyor.

There are probably more licensees in similar situations, adding to the statistical errors.

Doing some quick figuring with the spreadsheet of current licensees.?ÿ I've excluded inactive, retired, etc.?ÿ So only current licenses are provided below.?ÿ It appears that for Kentucky, the numbers fall out close to this:

Total Engineer Licenses: 15311

Total Surveyor Licenses: 1413 (321 Dual Licensees)

Total Engineer Firm Permits: 4188

Total Surveyor Firm Permits: 797

Since 2020, new Engineer Licenses: 2537

Since 2020, new Surveyor Licenses: 203

% Engineer Licensees in State: 27%

% Surveyor Licensees in State: 48%

?ÿ

Following are individual years for about a decade with total new Surveyor Licenses issued.

2013?ÿ 20

2014?ÿ 27

2015?ÿ 23

2016?ÿ 20

2017?ÿ 21

2018?ÿ 25

2019?ÿ 88

2020?ÿ 84

2021?ÿ 82

2022?ÿ 35 (Year to date)

?ÿ

Didn't have age as an available data point, but for all current licensed Surveyors in Kentucky, the number of years the license has been held is:

Average?ÿ 20 Years

Mode?ÿ 40 Years

A histogram shows a fairly even distribution of around 100 in about every 5 year increment.?ÿ Except that the current jump in new licenses (since 2018ish) is more like 300 and then at the upper end (46-60 years of license being active) there is more like 20 or so.?ÿ Slight increases to 150 licenses at the 10-15 year and 23-28 year ranges.
