I keep getting stonewalled when trying to submit this. So ill give it a third attempt....
?ÿ
I am preparing for the October PS and NH exam. I have been working in the surveying field for about 10 years. That breaks down as follows:
- 2 years at UNH studying Civil Technology with a specialization in surveying and mapping.
- 6 years in the field (4 of which I have been in responsible charge)
- 2 years at an aerial mapping company
- 2 years drafting my own fieldwork (1 of which has been drafting start to finish)
I received a two year surveying degree at the University of New Hampshire. I did the minimum for required reading, payed full attention in class, did all of my homework, got plenty of sleep, and did not study for a single exam. I wanted to test my knowledge rather than just regurgitate what I had studied the night before. I graduated with honors.?ÿ
I am writing to all of you to ask what would be the best use of my time when preparing for the PS exam. I absolutely hate to read. I plan on reading the PS reference manual cover to cover at least once in order to familiarize myself with it. What are 1 or 2 other books that you would suggest for a degenerate like myself? Those of you in NH, are there any NH specific tests that you would recommend?
?ÿThanks,
Will?ÿ
You should check the NH Land Surveyor's Association for reprints of seminar handouts. Order the ones that will address any deficiencies in your knowledge base. It wouldn't hurt to check other professional associations for the same, to cover national exam topics anyway.
A little late, but if you are still looking for advice:
?ÿI have never really studied for an exam either, and what is optimal for every person varies widely. I wouldn't read the refernce material cover to cover, just make sure you know what is in there.?ÿ
Not liking to read is an obstacle. The PS is idealy taken soon after completing a four year degree in surveying. Others who are curious and like to read will absorb what is needed on their own, without really thinking of it as chore, or as studying.?ÿ
My suggestion is to do the NCEES practice exam in a relaxed manner and then search out the most commonly used references for the areas you have trouble with, and read those.
The good news is that the PS isn't an unduly difficult exam. Many say the FS is more difficult. If math is your weak point you will probably agree.?ÿ
Good luck.?ÿ
.... what would be the best use of my time when preparing for the PS exam....
Sample exams. All you can find.?ÿ Simulate exam conditions and don't fool yourself. That will tell you just how prepared you really are.?ÿ
