SkilsUSA is a program that exists in many states, see link at bottom for Skills USA home page.

I am amazed at how easy it is to help your local school with a little time, used equipment, and perhaps travel aide financial assistance.

Below are two videos, the first one to promote the program to ALL STUDENTS as it applies to most ALL TRADES and SKILLS.
When I saw the video, I was amazed at the low number of views. My goal is for those of you with high school age kids or grandkids, please show and find out if this is something that their friends would be interested in if it was in their school. The Texas video was all about promoting SURVEYING specifically, and is very homemade...I feel the new one by Flycam should be more effective at the general draw - AND I am a 1955 model, so I am not too sure my interpretation is valid.

SkillsUSA is about creating a fully functional, accountable, effective, whole person, combined with whatever the specific skill the students pursue. Land Surveying and AutoCAD are two of the many areas as you will see on the link below. This video is shot in the same place of the second video, Corpus Christi, Texas - where Texas holds the state SkillsUSA finals.

SKILLS USA PROMOTIONAL VIDEO FOR ENTIRE PROGRAM

Land Surveying is a Profession and we always need the best trained help we can find. This program is about using a theodolite, (electronic permitted), Survey Chain (nylon clad steel), Chaining pins, plumb bobs, automatic level, level rod.
Law of Sines and Cosines.... Solving a triangle using chain and Theodolite. Running level loop - also includes safety, and other aspects of land surveying field work.

This video is about the Texas finals back several years ago.

Texas State Finals - Surveying Competition

Just posting as more and more young folks are not finding jobs and looking for SKILLS. I see this as a great chance for a win/win. Our profession has "input" into the future workforce, and the students, get "professional help" from the beginning, regarding the fundamentals of survey measurement, safety, field notes, and LIFE SKILLS which are all part of the program, no matter the skill.

Barton Barnett is a high school teacher in Duncanville Texas and has produced four students that are already level I CST certified.

I wonder if its similar to what was done a county away from us. My youngest son was skateboarding with a group of friends when one of the kids started to pull up a flagged stake. Before my son could say anything, an older boy stopped the kid and chastized him saying that its a Land Surveyor's stake and should be left alone. That prompted a discussion between my son and the older boy. There apparently is (was?) a class specifically about surveying in a high school one county away that was taught by a surveyor. It made quite an impression on the older boy my son spoke to. I'm still trying to get the details.

I got one of my best former employees from the high school. She is probably the most "woods savvy".

She was just awarded the "Young Surveyor of the Year" by Wisconsin Society of Land Surveyors.

Proud of her.
