I've done a full practice exam twice and the NCEES prep book and I need more questions to solve, the main issue being I am memorizing the answers instead of fully solving them. I would prefer NCEES based stuff but ultimately beggars can't be choosers. I also have the Surveyor Reference Manual to peruse.

Memorization is a major technique for passing FAA knowledge exams (e.g. written). You would be surprised how much you can memorize. The FAA publishes all of the questions and possible answers then private publishers publish books full of them with their opinion of what the correct answer is. Go through the book about 50 times and when you take the exam you will recognize the problems you get (you get a random selection of 50 out of a pool of 1000 or so).

This is backed up by an oral exam so it only works for the first phase of earning a pilot certificate.

I memorized a lot of the Flight Instructor Handbook for the Flight Instructor oral exam. The Inspector asked me a question; I rattled off the answer instantly, he asked another, I answered and he said, "OK you know it." If I was weak in it he would've really grilled me.

Have you looked into the solved solutions for the FS and PS exams? There are so many problems in there you probably won't solve them all. Plus you can use the same book for the Principles and Practices exam. It also gives you the breakdown of the percent of problems taken from each category.

The questions for the LSIT Exam are not published for you to memorize. The PRACTICE booklet gives you an idea of whatt the test may be like. I tell people to purchase a copy of the 1001 Solved Questions for the Fundamentals of Land Surveying. The title is something like that. Go through that book from cover to cover, over and over, until you understand how to solve all those. Do that, even if you do ONLY that, and you will probably know enough to pass the exam on your first attempt.

There is actually a grammar and spelling portion on the SIT.

I do believe that is where the practice exam I did a couple times came from!

I agree. The 1001 problems has some very difficult questions. It helped me past my LSIT several years ago. The Principles Exam is much easier much less math. Depending on your State the the State Specific can be a handful. Good Luck on your test.
