I have just been informed that the 4 yr BS in Geomatics/Surveying program has been reinstated. This degree can still be completed completely online. They indicated they will pursue ABET accreditation. I would encourage anyone thinking about online education to check this program out. I think there is a great need for this program and glad that it has been saved.
I look forward to hearing more. Their website has not yet been updated. Would be a great subject for a magazine article.
I agree. In fact, I just suggested that very thing.
I was getting close, used it for continuing Ed. Not sure what good another degree would do me though, I already have two licenses and I'm not looking to enter corporate employment, not sure I could get a job at this stage even if I wanted one!
But, I might end up with a degree just to keep my licenses because of continuing ed requirements. These classes are A LOT harder than sitting through some conference, that's the down side, but the expense is a lot less to take the classes than pay for conferences.
Another good one to remember is Texas A&M CC's program which, I believe, is already ABET accredited and affiliated with a large surveying and mapping program.
That's good news but without ABET certification, the degree is pretty much useless. On the other hand, I would think the program at Texas A&M CC is quite expensive. Also, the degree from A&M isn't specifically a Geomatics degree and some of the boards might not accept it.
I could be wrong, but I believe that once the certification is achieved, the degrees awarded before the certification are recognized retroactively.
This is what I overheard at a committee meeting a few years ago.
Useless? Not really a fair assessment. I agree ABET certification is preferable but many states do not require ABET certification and the degree is rigorous enough that most will accept it. I know that Nevada accepts the degree, North Carolina will accept it as well and unless ABET is required, I would assume most states would accept the program.
Tamucc now on line
The TAMUCC surveying undersgraduate program is now all on-line.

BTW, this site also has links to a number of scholarships available to students.
Full disclosure, I was associated with the program between 2005 and 2013.

As far as Great Basin goes my brother attended Penn State Harrisburg Campus and received Bachelor of Technology in Mechanical Engineering. In 1973 that program achieved ABET accreditation as a BS ME program. Penn State actually sent my brother a new BS diploma.
Part of the ABET accreditation is verifying how previous graduates are doing, such as checking EIT, LSIT PE and PLS success rates.
Paul in PA
Well... even not with ABET New Mexico will accept it and you can take the tests.
Well, I'm hoping to see an update on the Great Basin website. Even though I've got licenses in multiple states, not having the 4 yr. degree hinders me in a corporate environment. Maybe I can CLEP out of a bunch of the classes if I still pay for them. It's strange, I would need another LS to "mentor" me during the coursework. :-/
It has just been announced. Website probably won't be updated for a few more weeks or so. If you have any questions, contact:

I emailed them and had responses within a few hours.
I too am licensed in multiple ststes, but would like the degree.
I have looked into ETSU, but would like to check this Program out also, before I commit.
The website has been updated. Check it out! Great Basin College
I've been enrolled part-time for 2 years and about half way there. I found the program to be a perfect solution for those that have a job, family, etc, etc and need to get the education to go further in the profession.
Scott,
I'm curious. Can you take the classes on your own schedule, or do you have to be sitting in front of your computer at scheduled times, like attending a Webinar?

Kind of a mix of the two. This semester, I am taking 3 classes. One of them I have to turn in my paper by a certain date and do some evaluations on other students and read the discussion. The other two (survey classes) There is a set date to to a live webinar with the Teacher and the assignments are due on a certain date. Test and quizzes are online. The teachers have been awesome if for some reason you can't attend, but the webinars are recorded to listen to later. Hope that helps.
