Does anyone know how much different the newest practice exam is from ncees for the FS exam. I currently own the fundamentals of surveying sample exam third edition written by George cole PPI. Just curious if there are enough "new questions" to purchase or will it be a copy of what I have with 5 extra questions, thanks!
Not sure exactly because it has been a few years for me, but I remember the practice exam questions being similar yet typically harder than the actual test questions.
To practice for the new test you would want to be familiar with the new computer practice test format. If my understanding is correct, once you pay for it, you can retake it a few times and the questions will change. Use any old practice test for study, before taking the computer test. What you want to be aware of is the time it takes to do the computer practice test. Multiply that by the actual test to practice test question ratio to get an idea for how long it would have taken you for a full test. If you used too much time you need to adjust accordingly.

Thanks its my second try:mad: at taking the computer based FS exam. NCEES had a computer practice test for a while but NCEES no longer offers it. They only have the option of the paperback now ($13 + S/H $13) says its the same as the old with some new questions in it. The first time I took the test I spent too long on the first half so I left questions blank because I thought I would run out of time on the second half. Turns out the second half had no calculation problems and finished it very early and could not return to the first half. This time I'm more prepared and will finish questions quicker;).
The exam has changed as of a few months ago. There are now a handful of non-multiple choice questions. The question types include matching, fill in the blank, or in the case of a calculation, type in your answer to the nearest hundredth. There was also one where they gave you a topo map and asked you to click on the point of highest elevation.
For that reason, I would suggest getting the latest practice exam, if for no other reason you'll be more familiar with these new question types. Having seen it and the previous version, I can tell you there is some overlap in the questions, but all of the non-standard question types are new.
it's 20 bucks shipped from NCEES, I just bought it. It's cheap. Buy it.
Lsit and ncees fs were not so hard for me. But the amount of material covered was insane. Dont take a thousand refrence materials. Write down and condense the stuff you think is necessary, and take a small bound notebook with a few refrence literatures. Personally i think im setting a record trying to pass the mo state specific. Ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Not sure how it may have been in the past, but I can say for certain as of a few months ago you can't take anything but an approved calculator to take the FS exam. No books or reference materials. You may be referring to the CST exam, where you are allowed to use any reference you want.
Correct. Both the FS and PS exams are closed-book. State-specific tests are another matter entirely...

I scheduled the FS in July, ordered and received the practice exam in August ($25 with shipping), and took the exam a couple weeks ago on September 9. I remember looking at the web based practice exam sample in July so they must have got rid of that recently? Anyway, I expected the exam questions to be scrambled so when I spent about 3 and a half hours on the first half I was a little worried. But like you say all the math was in the first half and for me the second portion went quickly. I finished the second part in an hour and had a half hour to kill, reviewed answers for 15 minutes and submitted it 15 minutes early.
It was my first time taking it and I was told results would take 7-10 days. I got an answer in 3 or 4 days saying I passed. Overall, it was easier than I expected but the questions were wide-ranging so if you don't know a little bit about everything you might be in trouble.
When I was studying for tests seminars were far away and only give once or twice a year.
II went with the write the answers, tape them and listen to them over and over afterwards thruout the day and driving down the road.
The crew did not want a class while drinking coffee and driving to job at 7am, they did get a better view on how to survey.
"You do what you gotta do"
After receiving the most current NCEES FS fundamentals of surveying practice exam, I have found it to be similar in format but all the questions are different SO I DO RECOMMEND purchasing to prepare for the test. As far as the test, found many volume problems, equations, and definitions. Recommend searching the internet for each exam spec and spending some time knowing the basics of each.
I would not be surprised if they are using the engineers fundamentals exm to build off of.

George M. Cole practice tests are outdated but are good as additional review materials. You should get every review material from NCEES, as they're the ones that provide the exam. I also took the CBT a few years ago when they switched to that format. If the exam is 5 hrs, I decided to spend 3.5-4 hours in the first portion that is math intensive and an hour or so on the second part, which is just definitions. Good luck.
