Long ago I found a pair of chain handles. One was stamped "3 P". No maker or anything.

Yesterday I was walking through a flea market and spied what looked like a chain. The 'links' are 1.32' and there are 37. That puts it one true link short of 3 poles. Those old handles were very similar construction and have me wondering. Do I have the remnants of an odd chain, or is this something entirely different. I've never thrown anything (survey related) away but the handles were boxed so long ago I've got no idea where to look..

Has anyone ever seen a chain constructed this way? Alternatively can anyone identify what it really is...

So your handles added to the chain would make exactly 3 poles?

Yes, they would. I've got scales with the same type of handle, and they would add a half link to each end. At this point it's a stretch to assume that's the right configuration. I'm still not entirely convinced it's a chain. I cannot imagine what else it would be, hence the post. I was certain Mr. Cow would have the answer within minutes. Someone may have to reach out to Kent..lol

WAG, but could it be meant to measure degree of curve directly in either arc or chord definition?
