@jim-frame?ÿ

For those who have not met Tim, let me point out that the starting point of this training regimen is 3 miles. On a Tuesday.

@hpalmer This will be my 1st half. I've done Portland Shamrock Run 10k in the past, 2015 was the last time.

But totally agree. Having a goal is key to motivation.

Good on ya! I support any movement that keeps your body and brain ???ÿ connected and getting it done.

I did 50 pushups for my 50th birthday, this year will be 51.

Fwiw....yes in a row with out stopping.

Keep moving as much as you can as long as you can, we all slow down, and never know when it will be taken away.

Run Tim, Run!!!!

I don't run.?ÿ I've tried it a couple of times in the distant past, but it's just too inconvenient and my knees don't like it.

I got an out-of-shape wakeup call in 1987.?ÿ I was in the office on a Saturday morning catching up on some work, and the bookkeeper came in to do his thing.?ÿ After a couple of hours I left, but in the parking lot I noticed that the bookkeeper's truck (a Ford Courier) headlights were on (it was a foggy morning) and pretty dim.?ÿ I went back in to tell him, and he came out and tried to start his truck.?ÿ The starter groaned the motor over once and then quit.?ÿ I offered to help him push-start it, so he took the door spot and I got behind the tailgate.?ÿ It took us a couple of rolls before the motor finally got going.?ÿ I bid him good day, got in my truck and headed toward home.?ÿ I was huffing and puffing from pushing the truck, and 5 miles down the road I was still huffing and puffing.?ÿ I thought, "Uh oh, I'd better do something about this."

I borrowed a cheap rowing machine from a friend and started in at 5 minutes, increasing by 1 minute a day until I was up to 15 minutes.?ÿ After a couple of weeks I decided I could live with this, so I bought a good-quality consumer rowing machine.?ÿ I eventually upped my daily time to 20 minutes, and I used that machine for about 3 years, but I noticed that my neck was getting sore.?ÿ The doc checked it out, took x-rays, and let me know that I have a couple of degenerated cervical disks.?ÿ I decided that I had to change my exercise strategy.

I then bought a decent-quality consumer stepper machine (Precor).?ÿ No motors, just a manual machine.?ÿ I used that for 18 years before it finally wore out.?ÿ I found a used Stairmaster 4000PT on Craigslist for $200, and I've been using that daily for the last 13 years.

I'm not (and never was) an athlete, I just want to stay in good condition as long as possible.?ÿ Last week we made our annual visit to Yosemite, and even though we only stayed a few days we got in a couple of 10+ mile hikes with 2000-3000 foot elevation gains.?ÿ I can't even begin to keep up with my 23-year-old son, but I can still get to most places I want to see.

For those who like to run, more power to you.?ÿ It does beat up the joints more than some other kinds of exercise, but if it makes the difference between active and passive, I'm all for it.

@jitterboogie?ÿ

My fifty push up anniversary was a while ago.

"Ok, boomer" response from my daughter to things I've said to her was appropriated.

Jim, I use this when it's too cold to swim. Best investment (healthwise) I've ever made. ?????ÿ

Did you get it because she was part of the package with the machine?

I'll be very happy when I feel comfortable enough to run in another 5K. Crowds and the COVID-19 delta variant are making me think twice.

@field-dog

Likewise. I'm hoping the 10 weeks time will help with that.

Still, having a goal is good.
