The storms have been accompanied by high winds.?ÿ Coupled with saturated ground, my area has been losing a lot of trees.?ÿ And since trees like to fall on power lines, we've been having a lot of outages.
At my house we often go a decade or more without a power outage.?ÿ But this month alone we've had 3, lasting about 12 hours each.
It's been annoying enough that I spent $500 on a battery backup system for our tankless water heater.?ÿ We have a gas fireplace insert and a gas range, so now we can stay warm, heat food and take showers/wash dishes during an outage.?ÿ
The only remaining obstacle is the refrigerator.?ÿ I can run an extension cord out to my generator, but that's noisy and means pulling the fridge out from the wall to get at the cord.?ÿ It's a pain in the rear, so I avoid it.
We are in the thick of it, and I don't think I've ever seen rain like this. We've had one person drown today after trying to drive on a road we had closed, and a 5-year-old child was lost to the flood waters. This is serious stuff. Schools were all closed, and we were working from home for the most part. Tomorrow is more of the same.
Here in Hurricane World almost everyone has a generator. I turn off all breakers and the main feed to the house and then plug the generator into the dryer outlet and then turn on selective breakers. It will run the refrigerator, freezer in the garage, microwave, TV, cable modem, a couple of lights, and 2 fans. It??s not too bad but after 2 days or so it gets old quick. The pain with generators is storing 30 gallons, ??more or less? of explosive gasoline in the garage year round.
Y'all stay safe. ?????ÿ
Further north, in Portland, weather has been about normal for this time of year. A little rain pretty much every day, but nothing out of the ordinary.
plug the generator into the dryer outlet
That's probably illegal but works only so long as everybody who might do this is fully aware of the procedure and doesn't miss a step in the dark in the middle of the night.?ÿ Failure to get it right and sending power out of the house can overload the generator, or destroy it if power comes back on with it still connected, or at worst electrocute linemen who think the neighborhood is off line.

I always turn off the incoming main first so none of that happens. The only problem is I don't know when the power comes back on without looking at the neighbors houses. It's worked out fine for the last 5 or 10 hurricanes. ?????ÿ
Up here in Salem, you could say we are just enjoying the fringe benefits (we are receiving the northerly edge of the storm). Consistent rain, occasional breezes, but that's about it. We usually have a lot more sun breaks this time of year than we are getting recently.
But we aren't getting anything like the mess in California.
Nice little sunbreak, here in Puyallup today! Supposed to get a pretty good shower, later this week.
Didn't California just go through a long drought? Prayers for all affected; maybe the fire season won't be as bad this year...

We are still in a drought, most of the excess rain water is going out the Golden Gate.?ÿ The reservoirs can't be filled too much in case of a spring Pineapple Express.
Powerful thunderstorm came over last night, loud, heavy rain for an hour or so.
We have had a lot of rain.
High winds, down trees, limbs, etc.
Wilton is evacuated.?ÿ I am on high ground so no problem with flooding.
Grandson's school was closed yesterday due to a lot of wind damage.
Maybe it will calm down on Thursday.
