Got some great info from Perry on some of the ski spots up that way, but he pointed out that most of the locals don't stay at the resorts, so maybe somebody else here has.
Family wants to spend ~Dec.21-28 at one of the resorts. Looking for ski in-ski out accomodations, preferrably a cabin for about 6 people. Not professional skiers, but have been a few times to North Carolina and Jackson Hole. Going to be driving through Boston to pick up daughter #1, avoiding air travel. Anybody here done such a thing and have recommendations? Cost a factor, but not the most important factor. Don't vacation very often, when we do I want it to be a good one.
Thanks
I'll ask my pop...I don't ski but he does..
Where in New England would you folks like to stay?
I would say, that time of year, you'd need to head to northern Vermont to ski and have good/decent conditions. Killington comes to mind.
I've been to alot of mountains in the East and for a family vacation i would say Okemo Mountain. It's well setup and has good trails for all abilities, but I'm not too sure about the on mountain accomodations, never did that.
Sunday River in Maine has great ski in/out condos and a bunch of peaks to ski.
Killington in VT also has ski in/out accommodations and is an awesome mountain.
Okemo is a great local's place , it's one of the locals choices because it's not usually as crowded and has nice runs..
One thing you'll find around ME and VT is that many passes will allow you different slopes so you can try other mountains. (Everything is much closer here, than out west, I reckon!)
I've been to Sunday River several times and would go back in a heartbeat. I have also been to Killngton and did enjoy it, but not as much as Sunday River. Although night life in Killngton is much more accessible than Sunday River!
Burlington VT offers nice slopes and places, too. It's been years since I've skied there however....my daughter lives there and loves snow boarding at Jay Peak....
Oh, and by the way, I am not an avid skier, I only go maybe once or twice a year. I enjoy it but it's pricey!!
Jay Peak.

I put the word out to my Vermont Powder Pig friends...
Here's the first response:
No such thing as affordable ski in/ski out. I suspect Bolton, Smuggs', or Jay 'might' be the best deals if he shops now.... but that time of year will be very tough.
I'll check with a friend who owns a slope-side condo at the (Sugar)Bush too.
Sunday River Maine is nice and lots of skiing on a bunch of side-by-side mountains. Lot of intermediate terrain and all high speed lifts. Also Maine and NH seem to be $10-20 less per daily lift ticket. Probably less on lodging too.
Jay is one of my favorites but the lift lines do seem long on nice days; especially for the tram. Jay has the most snow in the east, but may be limited unless you like woods skiing and huge moguls. Seems like the intermediates are stuck with only one or two ways down the mountain from some of the lifts.
Bretton Woods NH is a good choice if you are NOT looking for expert terrain. Lots of wide, easy trails, pretty much all high speed detachable lifts.
Here's a couple ski pics to get you psyched...

Perry,
Except for the distance from anywhere, Sunday River has a huge selection of excellent slopeside rooms and condos.
I ski there each College Spring break with one of my sons (using a mid-week, ski and stay deal).
Stratton has limited slopeside, as does Killington, but the terrain and variety is very good.
With a car, Killington offers the most restaurant choices of any resort in the east.
We had a timeshare there for 14 years.
All of the above are littered with numerous High Speed lifts.
