We were in the extreme NW corner for Costa Rica last week for a reunion with my wife's family, at least 30 of us were there. 
SWMBO and I at the Beach at the resort Recreo, 5 of us were in Villa 11. 
11 01 42.60 N 85 44 02.02 W is the villa location
We took a day trip up to Nicaragua, only about 30 minutes north of us. Really nice folks and a stable appearing country. Kind of a police state feel to it, a little more so than CR which has no army.
Don't step on these at the beach!
My sister in laws boyfriend, Bryon, A Trimble guy from Frontier Precision out Colorado way took kite boarding lessons while i hung on the beach with some of the worlds best kite boarders at the 8th windiest place in the world. he could have picked an easier place to learn but as they said, "if you can kite board here, you can kite board anywhere." I was ill the first three days and didn't the energy to do it myself..
This guy was the best I saw...he had such control over the kite he would launch from land by lifting himself and board, slip the board on and hit the water...he could hover about 6' off the ground....
Our cook was awesome, this was a 10lb gainer of a trip for me!

One of my best clients swore that Costa Rico was the place to go. He really enjoyed all the times he has gone so far. My wife and I chose another Rico (Puerto). The pics this guy brought back makes us want to go.

We leave for a southern carribean cruise this Saturday. Can't wait. Had to stake out a foundation this morning. It was 7 degrees when I got to the office.
Winter vacation is almost upon me as well; heading to Snowshoe Mountain at the end of January. The wife and daughter have never been. 5 days on the slopes is going to be nice.

I would like to go there one of these winters. I have read it is a great Eco-Tourism destination and there are a lot of ex-pats there. Looks like you had a great time.
They don't have an army there,but they do have a hefty police force. The Mexican drug cartels are currently establishing a presence there. The drug cartels are the primary reason for a doubling of the murder rate in the last few years. All of Central America is a valuable piece of real-estate for the cartels because of the drug routes from Columbia to Mexico.

...never been there but I have a surveyor friend who moved there and started a B & B. Been trying to get me to come down. Next year perhaps... At the airport here on way to Europe and the UAE... I'm proud that i came back as white as i went! I'm sick of getting sun burned, and in our profession it's been a problem.
it's a big problem for a white yank like me, but I take caution. Since the wind was a steady 25mph each day the shade was very comfortable.
As for temps, it was a blazing 82 every day, the water was about 70..
My buddy Bryan got fried and even his lips were burned, boy did they swell up! Same with the tops of his feet, but he was on the water learning kite boarding for nine hours, virtually unprotected except for sunscreen...
Is your meet up going to be in Amsterdam? Sure wish I was along for that trip! Where is your friends B&B?

What's the skinny on Puerto Rico? I've thinking of going there for a week or so.
