So, answering Nate's thread got me wondering what the best concert I've ever seen was.

Hands down, Van Morrison at Montreux in 1980. Great concert plus I was 17, traveling around Europe on my own that summer, hooked up with this hot 30 year old French journalist after the show and spent the next two weeks in in Paris with her.

Much like surveying, all eduction in life doesn't happen in the classroom 😀

Can't pick a single "best".

Among several:

Dylan and the Band in 1974.

Jackson Browne in 1978 (Running on Empty Tour).

Cream reunion, (MSG 2005).

The Roches (numerous times at the Bottom Line 1974-2004).
(The Bottom Line was a great place to hear ANY concert).

Woodstock (although I didn't hear anything other than one song).

Habib Koite and Bamada (a Malian group, at numerous concerts 2002- date).

Dear Penthouse Forum, I never believed this would happen to me...

Seriously though, my best was Gov't Mule 09/14/2001 at the Filmore in Denver. Three days after 9/11. Flew out of RDU Friday morning and was one of the first flights back in the air after the shut down. Sat next to a dark skinned man quietly reading a small book in written in Arabic (may have been a Koran, don't know). I don't know who was more nervous me or him. Made it to Denver about lunch time. Spent the afternoon basking in the warm Colorado sunshine. Got to meet one of my heros before the show. Chuck Leavell is one of the coolest guys. A genuine rock star with zero attitude. Then then Mule melted my face with Dave Schools from Widespread Panic. Everyone had been stuck in their house for the last few days terrified of the end of the world they were watching on CNN. That night in that room everyone wanted to forget for a while. To get lost in some kick ass rock and roll and be reminded of the good in the world instead of the evil. It was like everyone was tuned in together in a way I have never seen before in a crowd of about 1,500 people. That is a place in time I will never forget.

The Allman Bros one night in Charlotte,NC some time in the mid 90s was a beautiful event. Somewhere between the cold beer and fungi I lost track what exact members comprised the band that night, of the setlist, of who I was with, the venue, the exact year and so on. But I do remember it had just rained when we got to the lot. The sun was stating to set. The colors in the sky were more than I have ever been able to find words for and the music that was played that night connected me with whatever higher power that everyone always argues about in a way I had never know before.

Ten Years after and Black Sabbath, upstate New York 1971 maybe.

Jimmy Hendrix, southern california, late 60's.

I tripped and I can't get down ..... so dates and times are really fuzzy.

Scottish Band Big Country in Edinburgh
INXS at the Warfield in San Francisco
Waylon Jennings in Seattle

Grateful Dead, Oxford plains Speedway, ME Little Feat opened as the start of their reunion...absolutely a great "Row Jimmy Row' in the second set of the Dead..

Next, maybe Dylan and Dead at Foxboro MA, although it was kind of odd that the Dead opened for Dylan and the Dead, I think that the audience wished it was the other way around...

Watkins Glen in 1973...Great show for a Woodstock re-do...

-Roger Waters, The Wall last year. Saw him at Madison Square Garden and it was so good we got tickets for the Nassau coliseum for 3 days later and going again in June when he comes to Yankee Stadium....Not a concert but a unbelievable show!!
-Have to mention Zappa plays Zappa with Dweezil Zappa...Saw him 2 years ago at the beacon theater in NYC. Talented musicians!
Highly recommend seeing either!

I've been lucky enough to see the Who, Jethro Tull, Stevie Wonder, Yes, Fleetwood Mac, Return to Forever, Bob Marley, Zappa (several times, all over L.A.)

Unfortunately missed the Beatles, Stones, Led Zep and Hendrix.

But, I had to check the date on the internets, but I saw Janis Joplin, Santana and the Youngbloods at the Hollywood Bowl, Sept. 20, 1969. Joplin died a year later, so that must have been it. My brother must have had his license for two whole months, and I was still 14.

Too young for a Fleming-style life lesson probably, with the curfew and all...

Dylan and the Dead played two nights at RFK stadium in DC on that tour, they alternated opening each night.

I saw Little Feat at the Lisner Auditorium when they were recording the sessions for "Waiting for Columbus"

From the Way-Back- ZZ Top/Wishbone Ash double header at the Warehouse in New Orleans; Allman Bros several times- same place; J.Geils Band- SP; Marshall Tucker/Charlie Daniels/Wet Willie triple header for $4.00- same space time continuum. Oh crap how could I forget my first at the Warehouse- Johnny Winter And- Rick and Johnny warped my head forevermore.
In the modern era it was Jerry Douglas, Bela Fleck, Brian Sutton, Sam Bush, and I forget the rest at the Gold Strike Casino in Tunica, MS. It was fabulous! The soundman was a genius; I could hear everyone at all times- couldn't have been better. I stood in line like a awestruck teenybopper to shake Jerry's hand. What a nice guy.

Can't pick a 'best' but here are some of best.

- Slayer and Metal Church in the Tacoma Dome convention center 1986? By far the most violent concert I ever been to before, or after.
- Metallica with ???? at the old Seattle Center in 1989?
- Metallica at the opening of the EMP Museum in Seattle 2000?
- Led Zeppelin at the Gorge in George 1998?
- Monsters of Rock at Joe Albi Stadium 1988?
- Marilyn Manson - Knitting Factory 2011.

I dont recall the exact years on many but the concerts sure were memorable.

VanHalen 1995 at the Starplex, hands down the best show I ever saw. Brother Cain opened for Skid Row then VanHalen. It was truly an epic evening!

I'm thinking of going to Austin City Limits 2012 this year to see that show. That has one helluva three day line up including the Chili Peppers!

WA-ID

Interesting line up. I bet you caught a COC show in there somewhere also. 🙂

Seriously, I saw David Allen Coe in concert one night, and the boys from Pantera (less the lead singer, it was right after they broke up but before dimebag died), where there watching the show and got up and did two songs with him. That was truly memorable, and strange as hell all at the same time.

I saw Van Halen in 1979 right after they released their second album and just started to get noticed.

The Stones 1981 Boulder Colo. Heart opens, Mick made the hills jump.

One of the top 10 was my first, Chicago 1970 at Loews State Theater in Syracuse.
