I finally broke down and bought what I thought was the coolest puzzle ever. It was too expensive, but I had my eyes on it for a while. I know some of you are into puzzles from posts from a few months ago. I hope this picture works. I compressed these I hope they are good enough resolution.
I had taken some pictures as the assembly of the puzzle progressed but someone (who shall remain nameless) deleted my pictures by accident. The above puzzle was 1000 pieces if I remember right.
I guess I didn't include anything in the pictures to provide a sense of scale. It is about 1' diameter. (depending, of course on what latitude you are measuring across....lol);-)
that is very cool!
Seriously cool! Where did you get it from?
Pago Pago???? Where on Earth is Pago Pago????
Deral,
I got it at Barnes and Noble. They had several spherical puzzles, including some of the earth that were smaller. The one I got was the last 1000-piece earth puzzle of that size on their shelf. They said they couldn't get any more. (I don't know why).
I can look on the box later on and get the name of the company. They have a web site and there is a model number.
It is pretty high-quality I think. All the pieces are plastic and look like they'll last. It cost about $100, however. That is why I waited so long to buy it. I am glad I did when I did, though, especially if they have discontinued it. Still; I can't imagine they quit making it. It must be popular even at that price.

My daughter got the same puzzle for my wife a few years ago. It is still displayed on a shelf. The two of them worked on it for several days. I have no idea what she paid for it or where she got it. I doubt she paid anything close to $100.
I wanted the Mars version, but I figured what's the use since the government has probably coerced the manufacturer into removing any photographic evidence of the secret NASA/Alien base.
The company is "Ravensburger" who makes a lot of puzzles.
They have a 540 pc. puzzle of the earth that retails for $45 540 pc. puzzle
The one I got retails for ~$100 and had 960 pieces. Ravensburger
I just found it on line on sale for ~$56

Neat, my kids also had one, but by the time they finished, they were missing one piece.

GET OUT THE DUCT TAPE!!!!
> GET OUT THE DUCT TAPE!!!!
LOL Scott, ya nut!!! 😛
I believe if a piece is missing from a puzzle that you buy from the store that you can call the puzzle company and ask for a replacement. Usually, they just send you an entirely new puzzle.
Sure makes me want to whip out and do one of my puzzles. I use to have an entire room dedicated to my jigsaw puzzle habit. I consider them therapy. Wendell considers them boredom at it's finest. :-/

Gordon,
I needed three pieces replaced. As Angel indicated, I was able to log on to their site and email them, telling them what pieces I needed. They sent the pieces in the mail and I got them within the week. No questions asked. (I didn't have to prove they did anything wrong, or supply a receipt.) The pieces in the Globe Puzzles are all numbered, and I gave them the numbers. I imagine if it were a simple cardboard-backed, picture puzzle they might even just send you a new puzzle as Angel says.
addendum....
The pieces were numbered. One could sort through the backs of the pieces and put the puzzle together by the number. That was one of my worries when I bought it....would it be too hard to put together? I pretty much put it together by the images on the puzzle pieces, but I used the numbers a couple of times. (1) I had some pieces wrong, and I couldn't figure out what was going on until I checked the numbers. (2) , I was able to find out that I had incorrect pieces and order replacements.
It may be genetic as their uncle would always hide one puzzle piece, when he was a boy, so he could be the one to complete the puzzle. He is grown now, but visiting from out of town.
!!@#$%^&*!
I just finished my Grids & Datums column for the August 2011 issue of Photogrammetric Engineering and Remote Sensing journal. The place is in the Samoan Islands. If you like, I can send you a WORD file describing the ASTRO station for PAGO PAGO Harbor in American Samoa.
puzzle pieces replacement mistake
I called for them to replace the United state part of the puzzle, but I got a state-plane version instead of the global coordinates. I don't know if those guys can get anything right.
(Actually that is a jigsaw cut-out of the United States with hole insets to display the US quarters collection. My nephew started the collection and I made this for him.)
This picture is before I did my final finish work and put on the plexiglass hinged cover. It is several years old now.
