Me to Youngest File: Hey-we need to coodinate things for this weekend. Mom's out of town and We need to talk so you get everywhere you need to be..."
Youngest File: "yeah, I know. Mom said she was going to be gone till Sunday and she was worried about what we'll do without her, and I'm like... PSHHHHHT... going shooting!"
it made me laugh.:-D
There is maybe hope for the Younger Generation....
I just got back from a week long adventure to attend my youngest daughters BS graduation (23 ys). Her BS is in Natural Resource Management, Business Major. One would think she'd be GPS'ish savvy, eh?
We had a day set aside to go Geogaching (ok, SP). Me, I do that for a living. But she had a great 5 mile hike through some awesome mid MI wooded areas. She had a sheet of about 10 locations we were supposed to find. I was supposed to upload all these locations into my handheld GPS.
My handheld GPS is a 1999 yellow Garmin ETrex. Works like a charm, but you ain't uploading nothing.
Her, she didn't have a GPS. Her boyfriend, he didn't have a GPS.
So we all tried to download some apps from our respective cellular providers. I have ATT IPhone, he has Verizon Droid. Notta. None of us could remember our password to get into our own account to download something alledgedly usefull like geochaching with your daughter.
After about 20 minutes of "....efff this shyte, lets just go hike...." so we went on our way. Great hike BTW.
Cool boyfriend, awesome daughter (oh yea, very proud), but the point of the original post was the developement of our younger generation.
In that regard, I think us geezers need to re-define the term "expectation". I expect nothing from youth except what exceeds their original goals. That defines their "success". Sad
No offense intended, but I'd say it's not only easier, more cost effective, and definetely "almost" as rewarding to get yourself a nice rescue lab mix dog from the pound down the road. They will also likely outlive us. And at the end of the day, isn't that what we wish for our kids. Even though the dog showed us more unconditional love and devotion than any child ever will.
Sad. Sorry Cheerleggers

Can't agree with that.
I just did a week long geology field trip with 50 odd second year students. I was expecting them to be terrible.
I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of their knowledge, and more importantly how quickly they grabbed hold of new concepts.
They were often naive, haphazard, or just inexperienced at fieldwork but my final thoughts were, if this is the next generation of professionals in Australia, then I have not much to complain about.
Oh yeah, and the top two geological maps were by young whippersnappers.
Every generation will have a similar makeup of people, from those who are driven to succeed, to those who aren't interested in anything beyond their next meal. You can't generalize an entire generation in such a fashion.
There is maybe hope for the Younger Generation....
It takes me much less than 20 minutes to punch in 10 waypoints to my handheld GPS, no computer connection needed, although that works too.
There is maybe hope for the Younger Generation....
Yes that is what I do.
I just press "mark" then revise the coordinates to the next point I want to navigate to. I don't bother to upload them.
I have the list of points with coordinates on a marvelous, battery free invention, a sheet of paper.
There is maybe hope for the Younger Generation....
I just walk to the coordinates.
There is maybe hope for the Younger Generation....
Me too. It should take about 20 seconds a point to enter them. I can't see how we've extrapolated a bad Geocaching experience (in which they had the GPS, the coordinates, and route planned ... yet somehow screwed it up) into the conclusion that the younger generation is doomed. Sounds like Wayne has a fine daughter that just graduated from college with a useful degree (or two) and will go on to be a productive member of society ... I'd hope someday I'll be able to say that, rather than "I bought a dog".
Glad to see the lad has his priorities straight!
Well done, File :good:

Rifle League banquet tonight.
CMP Three Position Shoot tomorrow (after the turkey hunt).
Burn more powder!
She takes her SAT test this morning, then if the weather holds we'll go shooting this afternoon.
This is her at the range from a few months backs.

Had to fix that!
Mea culpa for the gender assumption.
Busting stereotypes for double credit!

Dude, you need grand babies!! By the time they come around, your kids begin to appreciate you again. You might even begin to appreciate them, too.
That'll put some joy in your step.

you're right Pseudo, I'm a little tougher on myself
than I should have been. I was just very surprised by the entire thing. I almost took the 5 minutes to key things in, but in my own convoluted mind I was taken aback by her (their) total lack of preparation and their expectations of me to do everything. Call it 'tough love'.
I did question her coursework and that in the old days we called this "orienteering", with a map & compass in hand.
So I decided to let it go and just enjoy the woods & talks. It was all good.
I'm still very proud of her and know she will be very successfull. As will my engineer son and surgical tech nurse daughter. I figure I batted 3 for 3 there, so yes they've met my expectations and even exceeded them for some things.
I also finally got to meet my brand new 2 month old grandson. He's the first one, so that's very cool.
PS - I don't have a dog and don't want one. But I love em all.
Is somebody using the total station to check their targets in that photo? Works well, doesn't it?
Yes- it's an old set 2 I bought from Deral for the Micheal Porter fund. 30x works nice on thew range.
