56 years after the airplane crash in Clear Lake, Iowa that took the lives of The Big Bopper, Richie Valens and Buddy Holly, the NTSB is considering to reopen the crash investigation.

This caught my internet eye this morning because last night I watched "The Buddy Holley Story" that I grabbed last week on my DVR. This may have been the third or fourth time I've seen it. My wife and I had a discussion over the early scenes that our children could not understand that there was such extreme parental objections to early Rock and Roll. Comparing Rock and Roll movies I much prefer "La Bamba" (the Richie Valens story) to the "Buddy Holly Story". My DVR is set to grab "La Bamba" later this week.
As far as music movies go I would say Loretta Lynn's story is my favorite, especially the subtle but shocking way they covered the Patsy Cline plane crash. The only other crashes I recall are Ricky Nelson and John Denver. Glenn Miller died before I was born, but not his music.

Waylon Jennings' lifetime regret
After Buddy had broken ties with his original band, the Crickets, he put together a three-piece that included a bass player named Waylon Jennings. Waylon gave up his seat on the plane. Several accounts, including Jenning's biography, indicate Waylon remained haunted by the tragic events.
"..."Big Bopper" Richardson had contracted flu during the tour and asked Waylon Jennings for his seat on the plane. When Holly learned that Jennings was not going to fly, he said in jest, "Well, I hope your ol' bus freezes up." Jennings responded, "Well, I hope your ol' plane crashes," a humorous but ill-fated response that haunted Jennings for the rest of his life."
Some say the crash was the beginning of the superstition the V-tailed Beechcraft Bonanza was an "unlucky" airplane.

What about Jim Reeves? Ahhh "put your sweet lips a little closer to the phone". That guy's voice was as silky smooth as Bing Crosby's.
Ronnie Van Zant and Steve Gaines (Lynyrd Skynyrd) died in a plance crash, the rest of the band survived. Stevie Ray Vaughn died in a helicopter crash.
Played some music myself in Lubbock Texas, where the music is honored with Buddy Holly museums, and places. Saw the memorial in Iowa.
Jim Croce and Stevie Ray Vaughn both augured in.
I knew Maury Muehleisen who was Jim Croce’s sideman. We went to Glassboro St College together.
Tremendous talent. I had the pleasure of having very long conversations about the metaphysics of music and hear him practice and play.
As for music bio-pics, I thought Taylor Hackford/ Jamie Wayans "Ray" and Joachim Phoenix’s "Walking the Line" were well done.
Bill Graham, rock promoter, agent and owner of the Filmore East and West died in a helicopter crash. They had a memorial concert the week after he died in Golden Gate Park that was attended by 300,000.
