History is littered with the debris and destruction based on what people WANT to believe and contrarian views can be fueled by a burning desire to be privily to some secret that proves their specialness, and sets them apart from the masses they can dismiss as sheep. We see this desire being exploited so successfully in modern times in revanchist waves that it is no wonder that things like flat earth are seeing a resurgence. Keeps people busy and happy and looking the other way...
