what the heck?? none of my spaces show up....!!
This software is treating each letter as a stand alone word and deleting one of the spaces. Try no extra spaces or put a dash between words?
I guess...something like that. I'll try to fix it.
An underscore between each word would serve nicely.

Maybe if I tried different font style, or some other trick it would work right. underscoring between each word is a pain.

Tom,
This works well on my iPhone.
Keep up the effort and may Smaug leave in peace...

I see the solution has one mistake and the same cleartext letter corresponds to two ciperthext letters.
I suspected that substitution ciphers had become so easy to solve with computers that I could solve one in a few minutes just by doing a Google search. I was right.

Ashton,
Did you solve it the old fashioned way first? I get satisfaction using only my brain and a #2 pencil rather than a mere pushing of buttons with a google algorithm.

[inlinecode]If you highlight the text of your post and select "code" from the buttons at right (then one of the styles), it will preserve the extra spaces, like this .[/inlinecode]
It appears that M and W stand for the same plaintext letter, and there's a typo in the second letter of FOMNCYKGU
I sometimes do these with pencil and paper, but prefer a little program I wrote that puts my substitutions in for me and displays the result. It is the same thought process, no computer thinking for me, but so much faster to just type pairs of letters and if I don't like the result type a different pair.
Thanks for the comments guys. I appreciate the fix on the spaces Bill.
I like doing cyphers with my pencil and brain also. If someone wants to use the computer they certainly can. I just wouldn't consider it as much fun. I think my typos developed over trying to fix all the spacing problems. Sorry about that.
Ddsm.... I didn't figure out your code there.

Tom,
I guess I jump to a conclusion. I cypher the gist...relate to the Beerleg quote...Smaug = Dragon...thought You and Larry P. would get it..

Bill,
I still transcribe from IPhone to Pad... And solve like the newspaper puzzle. I've tried the on-line puzzles with the auto-fill...even the ones from the NSA...but enjoy the 'ah dangs' using an eraser. LOL

I did not try to do it with a pencil first. When I play with crypto, I prefer to look at other aspects. For example, did you know that if two people sign a Microsoft Word document with digital certificates, either of them can delete their signature and substitute a different signature, and the document will still appear to be valid?
