I remember a sunny day way back 40 years or so ago that stuck in my mind.?ÿ We were setting control in a development area that was, at that time, nothing but 80 acres of pasture.?ÿ Along the north line was an apartment complex and we were well over a quarter mile from it.

The design of the units was such that the second floor balconies were recessed into the structure.?ÿ I'm assuming some architect thought this would give the occupants some sort of privacy.?ÿ Boy was he right...

As he squinted through the gun my instrument man brought to everybody's attention one of the balconies was occupied.?ÿ Occupied by a couple of young lovers in the throws of..well, enjoying the privacy.?ÿ Of course everyone had to take their turn at survey-instrument-voyeurism.?ÿ After a few moments I regained the crew's attention and we continued on with our work.?ÿ I remember realizing at the time that I personally didn't regard human intimacy as a spectator's sport.?ÿ I guess there are plenty of frat boys that might disagree, but each to their own.?ÿ Over the years, in different situations and locations, I've caught glimpses of these same activities...humans thinking they were alone when they really weren't.

Last week I was on a job at a residential building site in a fairly remote rural area.?ÿ I had set up my base down by the section line and started my trek with rover in hand locating what the facility engineer had stuck in the ground.?ÿ The site was some 200 yards from the road and secluded behind a quarter acre stand of cottonwood and elm.?ÿ As I made it into the brush I realized there was a vehicle up at the building pad on the other side of the trees.?ÿ I then saw a young couple outside of the car.?ÿ At first it appeared as though this attentive young man was performing the Heimlich maneuver on a pantless young girl.?ÿ Only then did I grasp what they were up to.?ÿ I retreated as quietly as I could to give them their privacy.

I still needed to locate the line up near the building pad.?ÿ I slowly drove up the trail and stopped just shy of being n full sight so they could "see me first".?ÿ The couple was quickly in their car heading down toward me.?ÿ As I suspected it was a married couple checking out their new home site.?ÿ I explained what I was doing, we exchanged pleasantries and I promised them electric service within about 10 days.

From the looks of the pad it's going to be a house with about 3000 sq. ft.?ÿ Lots of bedrooms for kids...I have a feeling they're going to need the room.?ÿ?ÿ

?ÿ?ÿ

I was staying at a hotel in Fort Bragg, California across Route 1 from the ocean headlands. There are a lot of trails over there which are nice for walking after dinner if we didnƒ??t hike too much during the day. Iƒ??m ambling down a trail around a bend down into a hollow and there was a couple down thereƒ??it was too late so I just continued on by. They werenƒ??t anyone most people would want to see doing that.

I was stationed in West Germany with a Combat Engineer Battalion at a little post called Camp Eschborn just northwest of Frankfurt.?ÿ It was about a thousand men and zero women unless you counted the ladies that ran the convenience store on post.?ÿ When I first arrived rules were tight, women were allowed to be on post if escorted but only in the "public" areas of the barracks which pretty much eliminated the possibility of getting lucky thus no one bothered to bring their lady friends on post.

After Desert Storm, the rules got relaxed.?ÿ Women were allowed on post and in our rooms as long as no roommate objected. Our rooms were no longer subject to basic training style inspections on a weekly basis. The new inspections were for health, sanitation, and keeping the quantity of grain alcohol available per man within regulations.

There are a great many things that can't be unseen/unheard and there sure were a lot of vocal women in the Frankfurt area that liked GI's. ?????ÿ

I remember a sunny day way back 45 years or so ago that stuck in my mind. We were getting started on a new development; I knew the grading contractor, and we showed up on site with a 6-pack, late in the afternoon, to look at the site. There was an old farm house and outbuildings that needed demoed. We pulled up into the lane leading to the empty house and noticed a strange car parked next to the house.

We quietly walked up and peeked in the door to find a couple of teenagers, on a blanket, on the floor. My buddy yells: WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING TO MY DAUGHTER! (it wasn't his daughter). Scared these two shitless. They jumped up to see us laughing at them. Told them to get out, and don't come back. They lit out of there like a southern euphemism. Never saw them again...

Great story from a local farmer citing an occurrence decades ago.?ÿ He drove up on his tractor with an implement attached to enter a short driveway to a large field.?ÿ Couldn't get past a strange car parked in his way.?ÿ As he crawled down to see if he could move it, two heads appeared from the backseat.?ÿ Both naked as jaybirds.?ÿ The gal grabbed a shirt and wrapped it around her head hoping he wouldn't recognize who she was.?ÿ She was too late.?ÿ They didn't waste time putting clothes on before driving out of his way.

This took place on the Minnesota Iron Range in the 1950s. I wasn't there but the story was told often on the County field crew, and I'm re-posting it here.

Transit and tape survey, running the centerline of a gravel road in the middle of nowhere, average daily traffic about 3 vehicles. Head chainman, 300 yards from the gun, is trying to get line. Instrument man is looking through the gun but gives no signals. Head chainman waves the range pole and his arms, jumps up and down, yells but can't be heard. Finally, cursing, he walks back to the gun.

Turns out what the I-man was looking at was another 200 yards past the chainmen. A farmer's wife, wearing nothing whatever, taking a bath in the ditch. A nice day, a deserted road, a farmhouse that had no indoor plumbing, and a ditch full of fairly clean water, much easier to get at than filling a washtub with a hand pump. And of course the woman was one of many individuals on the Iron Range who didn't give a damn about what anyone else might think.

The first one that came to my mind was "like a scalded dog".?ÿ For reference that's one notch up from"lickety-split".
