A few days ago I heard a kitten in distress. Went looking and found him with his head stuck in a 2" pipe about 3 feet long. I keep them around because they make good rollers to move things around on in the shop. A short investigation which amounted only to a light tug on the kitten convinced me that he was really stuck. Tugged on him a bit but he stayed where he was and I began to wonder how hard I could pull without hurting or killing him. Called the wife and she did not know either. I did know that a cat's neck is strong enough to hold their body weight without suffering harm, so up in the air went the pipe and kitten, after about 1 minute, out he came with his matted down ears and hair and the wife caught him. Did not know if he would live because of the stress he was in, after about half a day he was his old self. Still don't know how hard to safely pull on a cats neck.

Next time, and odds are there will probably never be a next time, remember one word, lubrication. Pam, butter, that kind of stuff. Works great. I keep a can of the cheap stuff around just for those occasions. 🙂

Take care,
Ed

Well done.

Well, I've been doing some testing and it looks like a maximum of 12ft/lbs. per inch of neck diameter seems to be the average. I tried to do some testing with spray margarine, but I have run out of test subjects.

Andy is that straight tension or is it torque. What are the limits if I do both?

My first thought was compresser air, too, LOL.

I would think that inserting a smaller pipe into the other end, something blunt like a capped pvc pipe, and pushing the cat would be better than pulling. And some Pam, too!

Next time...

Throw the CAT/PIPE situation up in a tree top...call the fire department.

If not the Fireman, who?

OR...

blow some Cannabis sativa smoke into the pipe...then determine what would hold...the PIPE vs. STONEd cat...

OR...

Wrap the pipe in a special Tartan...pour beer:beer: down the open end of the pipe...swing assembly over head in a clockwise direction...chanting:
GEO...SPECIAL...GEO...SPECIAL...
and fling the whole thing towards the nearest SENIOR corner...

101 Uses for a Dead Cat

Stumbled onto a book with that title back in the 70's. Every page was a simple cartoon depicting a different use. One that stuck in my mind was using it for a door stop.
