well, actually, more like concrete. About a foot of the snow fell, but it's nearly unshovelable. Looks like I'll have to break the snowshoes out to get into my spec house today. SWMBO says I'm stupid if I try to shovel 1200' of driveway....
1200' with a shovel is too much...hats off to you.
My porch this morning:
It had finally melted...now, 12 more inches.
just measured 19"...not 12"
"But," she said,"you've always told me that THIS much was 12 inches."
46.4 degrees and sunny here in Conway, SC.
SNOW! - Sugar Season
Perry:
Shouldn't you be our collecting sap? (on snow shoes)
I bet your "backyard" is beautiful in the other seasons, too!!! Can you swim in that water in the summertime?? 🙂
Tom
The maple trees are still sleeping. I suspect they will wake up in a couple weeks.
Well I got 100' of shoveling done and gave up. Ended up snowshoeing the rest of the way. Glad I got the solar panels and 2 fully charged-up batteries.
It rained so much before the snow that there is a river running down my new driveway. Well I guess I'll hike it till it melts. I figgure it will all be gone in 6 weeks anyway.
Here's the last third of the driveway:
Perry,
You have long winters there,
isn't that a problem for a surveyor?
I suppose you get used to it of course
but you can't survey roads all year long as we do over here.

surveying in the winter
christ,
Thinks are slow anyway this winter (recession), but we usually do quite a bit of surveying in the winter. We use cut-off saplings (with nails) as traverse points, set the legs up right in the snow and spend the day on snowshoes.
surveying in the winter
I suppose you do a lot of boundary and/or forestry surveys.
It's amazing how different we work depending on the region we live in and the different seasons and weather conditions we have to deal with. But we use the same tools and procedures ...
I think I should have a hard time to be productive in these conditions.
Thanks for the pics
&
enjoy your winter surveys,
Chr.
Surveying in the winter.
Christ, the trees have no leaves, all the muskeg and rivers, ponds, lakes etc are now hiways (for a snowmachine)it is actually a lot easier in the winter for a number of projects. Of course there's the cold, that can shut you down. Had trouble with the hipers one season, wouldn't hold a charge for more than an hour. Techie asks, "how cold is it?" I respond "45 below" He says "get the f__k inside, their only rated to 10 below" So I switched to the total station and snapped the DC cord. Got the f__k inside!

We had 22" of that same concrete this morning. My lawn was almost clear of snow when the rain changed over to snow yesterday.
I want winter done.

It appears you have alot of snow every year on your long driveway. I also seem to remember you do alot of logging on your property. Have you ever thought of getting an old 2 ton flatbed dodge powerwagon with a snow plow?
Something like that would haul lumber and logs very well and with it chained up, it would plow just about anything. I'd get one just for the coolness factor. You could paint the door with your company name.

Here are a few examples that are sure get the idea across.
Just a one ton 2wd for me...
it;s a skidder,lumber hauler and a sap hauler too.
If we only worked when there was no snow on the ground...we'd have a lot of time off every year. Although that thought has a definite appeal in my mind if not to my bank account.
The reality is that a fair amount of our work for oil and gas exploration is in the wilds of northern Alberta and much of it only accessible to drilling and pipelining equipment when the ground is frozen during the long winter months.
It can be starkly beautiful.
Just a one ton 2wd for me...
That is alot of weight for a 1 ton with that water tank in the back! 1200 gallons at 8 lbs/gallon...!!
I recently bought two old 2 ton trucks. One is a 5 yard dump truck and the other is a flat bed. I plan on making a fire truck out of the flatbed. It will also double as a reserve for watering trees.
The dump is being used to build roads.

I have used similar hub sets when traversing thru swamp and other flooded areas.
