After sending a proposal I got a call back telling me they were gonna look around elsewhere.
Here is the basics of the conversation.
Not so Potential Client: Your price seems high!
Me: Based on what?
Not so Potential Client: I don't know, the last time I had a survey it only cost $450.
Me: Really....where was this at?
Not so Potential Client: It was here in Rome.
Me: When was this?
Not so Potential Client: About 10 years ago.
Me: How big of a piece of land was it?
Not so Potential Client: Oh it was a 1/3 acre lot in town.
Me: Wow.....$450 for a 1/3 acre in town lot 10 years ago.....that's amazing.
Not so Potential Client: Yeah I know.....so now you understand why I'm shocked.
Me: No.......No I don't.
Not so Potential Client: Well your proposal is for $4000.
Me: Yes, it is.
Not so Potential Client: Well that is very high.
Me: Maƒ??am do you realize that all surveys are different and not the same price?
Not so Potential Client: Of course, but I didnƒ??t think it would be $4000.
Me: What were you expecting?
Not so Potential Client: I donƒ??t know but one of my co-workers told me it might be around $1200.
Me: Maƒ??am, this is a 15 acre tract with a 900 foot access easement across 3 other peoples property that has never been surveyed plus you want the entire 5500' perimeter staked and the 900' easement staked and the future house spotted so $4000 is the absolute least I can do and I feel like that might be a bit low..
Not so Potential Client: Well it just seems way too high. Iƒ??m gonna have to talk to my grandfather because he is giving me this land and I donƒ??t want to have to spend that much money for something he is giving me so maybe he can find someone to survey it for less.
Me: Ok, let me know if you change your mind, I would be happy to help you.

Just disheartening because even at 4k I am lower than I am entirely comfortable with but since I am a solo guy I don't have the overhead of others but I still don't want to give it away but I can all but guarantee she will find someone to do it for half the price.

Edit: This should be a $6000 survey minimum all day every day. However, it is a foregone conclusion that one of the other survey companies will undercut me and they have much more overhead that I do with leased offices and employees. I guess working for wages is the fashionable thing to do.

That is almost exactly the same conversation and thought process I have with many website proposals.

I always like to remember this exchange when negotiating a price.
