Below is a pic of my Christmas present to myself. It's a combination lathe, milling machine, and drill press. I've been wanting to get serious about restoring and repairing old equipment, but I've been limited to finding existing parts, cleaning, silver plating, etc. Now I can get serious about making parts.

I've got some serious learning to do after I clean the machine up, adjust everything, learn how it all works, etc., but I'm going to have fun and enjoy retirement starting in a couple of years.

If you've got something you might like me to work on, give me a shout. 🙂

Color me green with envy!

That is so cool. If I had a toy like that in the shop I'd never get done any surveying.

Wow! You could build your own instrument with that.

If I didn't have anything else to keep me occupied (no chance!) I'd equip a shop and try to build a working replica solar compass. There must be some way to use a modern transit or theodolite on a rotating jig to set the positions for engraving lines on the circles.

Color me jealous, too. I've long thought about buying at least a lathe, but I know I don't have time to really make good use of it. I do have a homemade tool post with manual feed that I mount on my drill press table in order to accomplish minor turning tasks, but it's not a substitute for a real lathe or mill. Someday...

Wow!! LIDAR-shmidar, I'm thinking a Geosynchronous-Orbiting Multi-Spectrum-Imaging satellite..once you get through the Getting Started chapter, of course. 😀

Well Now Dave, now that you ask, I am trying to figure how to convert my meade telescope mount to one of my survey tripods. I have a collapsible old one that I would like to use in place of the cheap aluminum one the scope came with.

The tripod has a standard K&E threaded head and the scope has the regular three flange attachment that goes to the three legs of the cheap tripod.

Thanks!! Should I expect it in time for Christmas? 🙂

That's an awesome little toy you got there, Dave, did you tell Santa that I've been good too! 🙂

I haven't been in touch with Dawn to know whether you've been good or bad. Maybe better have her call me. 🙂

Send me a pic of your telescope mount that you are speaking of. Might be able to offer a suggestion.
