During Katrina, we were cut off from the world for several weeks and without power for a month. Things got better once I rigged my generator directly into my panel box. Right now I have my generator connected to the essentials: the refrigerator and the Internet/U-Verse. So... we are without power since just before daybreak but we have food, gas, internet and digital TV- not complaining.

That's great planning on your part.

Be safe

Even though we are not threatened by the storm I just checked the oil, filled up with gas (ugh) and fired my generator up as a check. I can't power the entire house (only 6KW) but I can power the fridge and freezer (and coffee maker) so we could last a little while anyway. Ya'll please be careful down there.

Katrina was such a mess here that the first thing I did after all was said and done was to go buy one of those whole house generators that runs off my natural gas line. Just got all ready for the next big one. Issac must have seen my generator a chose to move west enough that I doubt that generator will fire up this time. DANG IT!! I really wanted to see if it really works!! ALL that money and its only crunked up 3 or 4 times!! :-@

That reminds me of an East Texas ice storm 20+ years ago. Me and the wife had only been married a couple of years. I had to get up at 6:00 in the morning for several days and crank the gas powered welder/generator sitting on a trailer in the back yard just so my wife could use her curling iron.

I was starting to have doubts about married life.

Now that's what

you call true love. I hope she has hung onto you after that. About 30 years ago, when I was working in Chattanooga, we had a secretary that got up an hour early so she could blow dry her husbands hair, now THAT'S just plain wierd.

I bought a natural gas powered generator after our last hurricane in 2008 and haven't had to use it yet either. If I had known it would prevent us from having another power outage, I would have bought one years before I did.
