Here we have cyclones ( your hurricane)

Predicted to hit north Queensland coast line at / near Cairns in 12 hours with winds of 300KMh (200Mph)in cyclone's path. Was that Katrina speed, with a metre of rain. Waves off coast nearer centre already 12 metres high.

Predicted to be Australia's worst cyclone and worse than Tracey that flattened Darwin Christmas day in 1974.

Kinda doubt it will be 200 mph, that's 50 miles per hour faster than the Category 5 which is where our scale ends.

Either way, hope they all run for cover. We rode out a cat 1 (Ike) with the eye hitting our little town. It was cool, but damn they are destructive.

Check this out for wind speed

They are the meteorologist's wind predictions

They have mentioned category 5 and that they will most likely not be able to record top speed as equipment will break.

Any rate will know this time tomorrow.

I just checked the forecast and they do say possible 300k per hour gusts. That's not 200 mile per hour but damn close. I sure hope it quietens a bit before making land-fall.

One of the "kids" that work here in the summer (a son of one of the partners) is going to school near Townsville. He has been evacuated a number of times because of the rains already while he was in Brisbane. Now he has shifted to Townsville and this storm is heading right at him. Sounds like they are riding it out. Why I don't know. It is massive! The photos of the thing make it look much larger than Katrina.

I know that 300k is 186 mph conversion, but at that speed 10 mph does not matter everything in path will be destroyed!

I guess it's awfully close to that 300kph winds already. ABCNews online posted this about an hour ago:

"Category five Cyclone Yasi has knocked out the weather bureau's radar system on Willis Island, about 450 kilometres east of Cairns in far north Queensland.

The weather bureau's radar and wind speed measurements on the island failed just before 9am (AEST).

The bureau says the maximum wind speed recorded before the equipment went down was 185 kilometres an hour.

Three weather observers and a technician left the island yesterday."

Radu, Cairns is a beautiful little city. It does not have much elevation and will take a beating in this storm. Hope the folks are moving away from the coast. Here are a few pictures I took when visiting there. (my first time to try to load a picture, so hope it works.)

Perry & Jerry

Perry I did say one metre of rain. BTW that will be equivalent to 2 entire years rainfall here in Adelaide. At moment the cyclone to hit coast at same time as high tide so they are consequently expecting tremendous flooding at Cairns if the eye hits there..

Approaching cyclone YASI already bigger than Katrina

width over 500 kilometrse (slow loading)

Comparisons

Fortunately while Yasi more powerful the area it will cover is no where near as populated as New Orleans.

Projected path will cross entire Queensland in 36 hours.

path 1000km

I went through one about that strong in 1969. The hurricane had sustained winds of more than 180 mph and gusts estimated up to 220 mph. 220 mph is about mid range for a tornado here in the U. S. I hope it does as little damage as possible to you and yours.

If history holds true, the australian hurricanes, floods, cyclones, tornados, or anything else australian will, on the surface, look as strong as their american counterparts, but in reality will only be roughly 75% of them.

This is what is being shown in the news as of today. I believe it said the wind gusts were up to 186 mph. Batten down the hatches.
