Lottery tickets. I have a buddy who is a scratch 'n sniffer from heck. He hit for a million on a $20 ticket about 20 yrs ago. A couple yrs ago he hit for $100K on a $5 ticket. He is an obsessive gambleaholic.
I'm pretty sure most of his money is bye bye, but he had some fun in Vegas for lots of even more fun.
What is that old joke - How do you make a million dollars surveying? Start out with 2 million....lol
You're asking a bunch of working Surveyor?!!
Write a book on how to make a lot of money and then go on tour talking about how to make, a lot of money, charging ... a lot of money.
Even got a title for ya. 'GREED'

Now don't forget to cut me in on some of that action. 😉
I think Clyde Barrow might have been on to something!
Making is one thing; hanging on to it is something else....
Don't ask a politician. They'll tell you they're poor and can hardly get by (even though they have millions and get a Million for even a speaking engagement).
To paraphrase John Templeton: Buy assets at the point of maximum pessimism and sell them at the point of maximum optimism.

I can tell you what won't work.
Hold on to a business model where you get paid for your time. There is an absolute limit on the amount of time you have to sell.
If you want to get to a high level, instead of selling time you need to provide a product or service where the value provided is high relative to the cost of creating the product or service.

That's the plan!

Nice article Jim.
It got me to thinking. The article quotes that one attorney (working for his time) gets paid the staggering sum of $1,800 per hour.
Let's get creative and see what that could mean. Assume he works (billable time) 15 hours per day. Tough to do but when you are making that kind of cash, why not give it a try, right?
When you make money like that you don't want to take any time off, so you work (on average) 6 days a week, and 52 weeks a year.
All that adds up to just under $8.5 million per year. That's pretty good. But, think of it in a slightly different way.
This map shows the wealthiest person in each state and how much they are worth.
In my home state of NC the wealthiest person has a net worth of $8.1 billion.
How long would this outrageously priced attorney have to work and save every single penny to amass that figure? My rough math says he needs to put in about 960 years. Remember, the figures for our working man assumes all of the income is net and he pays zero taxes.
Ok, maybe our guy here in NC is on the high side of the scale (he isn't but let's play with the numbers anyway). The man in Delaware is only worth $830 million. Our lawyer only has to work 98.5 years to get to that figure. Woo hooo. Now we are talking.
Let's face it, nobody is going to get really rich selling their time.

To further the discussion, let's look at what the potential income is for someone who does not sell their time.
I did a search for the most watched videos on YouTube.
Let's not jump to the top of the list. How about we drop down to #19. Adele's Rolling in the Deep is there. As of July 31st 2014 that video has right at 525 million views.
If Adele could find a way to get $1 per view, the obvious figure is she makes $525 million dollars. But who can get $1 per view for a music video? Nobody. Can she get 1 penny per view somehow? Advertising maybe? That drops the figure to a mere $5 million. All for one song, one video. Think it unrealistic to get 1 penny per view? Ok, 1/10th per? Even 1/100th per view means $50,000.
You get my point. She is one of those persons who doesn't count on selling their time to make a living.

That is, get people to pay for something, that does not exist, does not have to be made, does not have to be warehoused, does not have to be shipped and does not have to be repaired.

I'll double down that I can play the air guitar better, and maybe get some hot chicks to play the air drums and sing into Mr Microphone with no batteries. I hear they hang out in Austin. Any truth to that rumor?.... 😉
How to do it.
Lie. Cheat. Steal. Have no ethics or morals of any kind. Be willing to pimp out your grandma if someone will pay you for the privilege. Never ever give anyone else a break for any reason. Become totally heartless. Then spend absolutely none of your money except to make more money. Forget luxuries like $6 hamburgers and bottled water for $1.29.
Study those who have had huge wealth. Those who did it, built on the backs of the ignorant and poor. So do whatever it takes to keep the masses ignorant and poor. Those who inherited it rarely added to their wealth substantially because they had never learned how to work, lie, cheat and steal.
Also, it helps to own your political figures from city councilman to President of the U.S.
Why do you want to?
It's really true, you know, that money is the least important object to pursue.
Which is not to say that I do not pursue it.
I do.
I also do a lot of other foolish things.
I'll get better in time.
Fortunately, I have a lot of time.
Eternity, in fact.
I believe I'll have another Rob Roy, bartender.
Thank you,
