All the old playgrounds in the area have been rebuilt to be safer. I just took two young relatives to the big one at the park. Many of the kids climb on the equipment on the outside in the most unsafe manner up the support columns and on the outside of the slide tubes. Darn kids just won't use the equipment as designed
Speaking of playgrounds and play in general....Have American Parents Got It All Backwards?
My 3 year old likes to play with knives. I discourage it, but the fact is, he's only cut himself once, and it was nothing major. They also like to climb trees, and up on top of the tree fort. I cringe, but let them.
Sometimes you can buy for scrap metal the old HUGE stainless steel slides, take em home, and set them up in your own backyard. I just MISSED one, like that. IT used to be that kids were born smarter, and were able to use that stuff. Now a days, anything over a foot off the ground, well, they can get killed on it! 🙂

Kids want the thrill sometimes. That's why they were climbing on the outside of the covered slides at the park. The designed use was too boring for them
We were very proud of our playground. It was expensive and made from PT. So we ripped it down and replaced it with a "recycled" park.
The sign bugs me
This playground is made from the equivalent of:
9000 cans
100 tires
and so on...
What does equivalent mean?
I have two of the old huge stainless slides that you are talking about. One was the old school playground slide that was given to my parents when I was about 3 years old and that I grew up with. I will pass it down to one of my sons. The other had a similar story with a friends family, but had no children left to enjoy it or pass it down, so it will go to my other son. That is my idea of "recycled" playground equipment and no environmentalists were maimed or injured in the setting up or use of it.
Out on the farm
Farm kids didn't need no fancy stuff to have fun. Start off by climbing the woven wire fence at the corner post next to the corner of the little chicken house. Leap off the low side to warm up. Eventually work up your courage to leap off the ridge. Then go to the barn, climb to the haymow, then leap out the door. Move to the old railroad box car that's used for grain storage. Notice the climbing bars on the one end. Climb up to the top then pretend to have a big fight with your buddy like they showed in all the old TV shows and movies. For real fun, round up some calves and catch them in a tight pen. With the help of a couple buddies you could eventually get one trapped enough for you to climb on and go for a ride. The bigger the calf, the bigger the bragging rights.
