This board reaches a sufficiently diverse group such that it seems any possible ailment, allergy and surgery has affected some within the group. A couple of days ago my youngest daughter told us that she had experienced an occasional pain in her chest not too far below the left arm pit area (below the boob was her choice of phaseology). I suggested pleurisy pains as a possibility. She had never heard of such things and swore I was making it up. A simple Wikipedia check on the subject provided a rather lengthy list of somewhat famous people who had succumbed to pleurisy or, at least, had significant issues along those lines. LeBron James is one example.
Anyone here have any personal stories about pleurisy?
I had pleuritic pain for years, often once a week, lasting minutes. Extremely painful and worse if I tried to breathe. It went away when I got back to lifting weights. Once, it lasted almost an hour and my beloved wanted to take me to the ER, then I coughed once and voila.
As a young 16 year old, I made a trip to the ER and was diagnosed with pleurisy. From what I understand, it is somewhat of a common ailment, inflammation of the lining of the lung.
I hope she gets to feeling better. I'll include her in my prayers.
Have had it on and off sporadically over the years. Usually after twisting or turning the wrong way or rag dolling it on the ski slopes. Very discomforting, extremely painful to move or breath. First time I got it I thought it was heart attack. Resulted in a visit to Mr. M.D. who made the diagnosis. If it doesn't clear up on it's own in a few days with some anti-inflammatory drug like ibuprofen, probably best to get it checked out. Have also had similar pain from muscle spasms in my back, pressure points I think they're called, probably from spending too much time seated behind a computer playing CAD jockey. Getting plenty of exercise seems to keep most of those problems at bay for me.

Yes. My Dad had it once. They first thought he was having a massive heart attack. They kept him for a couple days and then thought it might have been pericarditis being he was grabbing his chest. They loaded him up on anti-biotics and he was ok after several days. My brother told me about it after it was all over. He was completely freaked out.
Herbal diuretics are very good to drain fluids from head, sinus, body, linings and joints.
Most any decongestant or allergy medicine works also, Benadryl and such.
My doc told me that the pleurisy attacks can also be a cramp related to a calcium deficiency and not from a lack of potassium. He has me chomping down several calcium laden antacid tabs a day.
My pains are usually located in the rib section and start when I reach behind me, such as getting something from the back seat.
Darn near impossible to remove my Lacrosse Grange's when that sets in.
Cardio exercise to rid oneself of those plugs is useful.
Untreated can lead to pneumonia.
