My son found this object while helping me on a rural, wooded boundary survey. It appears to be either copper or brass. Its cylindrical about 1 1/2" in diameter and about five inches long. The bottom has a pressed on cap. The top has a pressed on cap with a valve. The hole on the bottom of the valve is only the size of a pencil lead. Whatever was in it was compressed and what was left smelled almost like engine starting fluid. There are no markings that I can find on the brass/copper. There is a sticker that is so weathered that it can't be read. I placed a standard sized bic lighter beside it for scale. Wondering what it is. Any ideas?

I'm going to guess a fire extinguisher, I have a vague memory of seeing one long ago.

That's it. Thanks. He's had a blast on this job. It's an old dump and there are a lot of old cars and such. He loaded the truck down with hub caps and old steering wheels. His prize is a steering wheel from a '57 Chevy Belair.

Is the land owner okay with your son hauling off property from the site?

Its an old "inert landfill" from the 60's that is going to be covered up. I asked them and they have no problem with it. The old cars are mostly crushed.
