An image of the braided Rakaia River in Canterbury has won an online vote for satellite imaging firm DigitalGlobe's best satellite image of 2011.

The company encouraged users to vote on its favourite 20 images from last year. Among others were Ground Zero in New York, Palm Island in Dubai, and the space shuttle Atlantis on the ground.
The river rises in the Southern Alps and runs east or southeast for 150km before entering the Pacific Ocean 50km south of Christchurch.
I would love to have that framed and hanging on my wall.
I actually would love to have painted that (I don't paint). The world around us is beautiful beyond our abilities to duplicate.
Even though that image is of human occupation, aren't we a part of what makes our world beautiful. It can be ugly if you see it that way.
I don't always; I try very hard not to.
