WOW!! You can really see it in this pic!! 😯 ?ÿ
Here's what the article says...
#40YearsAgo at #MountStHelens, Apr 27, 1980: From the Timberline parking area, USGS scientist Peter Lipman zeros the theodolite??s telescopic sight on the Windy Ridge target a mile east. He turns southwest to Goat Rocks, setting angles from Friday??s notes. The target should be centered, but it??s not in the field of view. I??ve forgotten how to measure, mutters Lipman.
He nudges the telescope right for another yard of view and no target. Another nudge and there it is. He centers the crosshairs and reads the angle. He zooms in on another target to make a measurement that comes out to be the same as Friday??he??s not forgotten how to measure. Lipman repeats the shots to verify. In two days, Goat Rocks must have moved 3 yards north.
It??s not glacier ice sliding. A mile-wide face of rock bulges north as Goat Rocks pushes out one and a half yards a day.
Image taken April 27, 1980 of the "bulge" on the north flank of the volcano (mound in center) as viewed from the Timberline parking area. Scientists used this area to set up monitoring equipment such as the tiltmeter and conducted surveys of ground deformation.

Just for information I quote from a AGA paper;
"Eruption claims life of U.S. geologist
The original shattering explosion of Mt. St. Helens claimed the life of Volcano Expert?ÿDavid Johnston, 30, of the?ÿ
U.S. Geological Survey office in Menlo Park, CA.
Johnston had been 5 miles from the cone, observing and measuring with a Model 8 Geodimeter the growth of the
ominous bulge on the north side of the mountain. The instrument was owned by the Smithsonian Institution, on
loan to the Geological Survey. No trace of instrument or operator has been found".

Wild or Kern? I can't imagine it's a Wild T-1??ÿ How could you keep it level when the ground is shaking like it was.?ÿ Kudos for the umbrella though.?ÿ
@daniel-ralph It looks too small (I can't really tell from the photo) to be a T-2 but certainly they would need the added precision for sighting at that distance. I believe that the Kerns during that time period were gray, it's been a while but that's what I remember anyway.

@john-nolton Thanks. After 40+ years I do forget (or muddle) things. The last one I ran (DKM2AE) was in the 1980s and it WAS green.

Angel - my stomach is starting to resemble ??the bulge? after a months worth Of quarantine. And SWMBO didn??t help any by having this stuff stashed. ?????ÿ
@flga
At least you have some Sees Candy left! They stopped production temporarily. Can't find any of their chocolate anywhere right now. ????
Where exactly is the "bulge" in this photo??ÿ I'm finding these updates on the blast fascinating.?ÿ?ÿ
I circled it for ya. ?????ÿ
It is fascinating!! I've always been interested in volcanoes. Crater Lake is my favorite lake! I like how Surveying is intertwined with it all. 🙂 I get the updates from the USGS Volcanoes Facebook page. They're doing this throwback thing back to 1980 to the weeks and days that led up to Mount Saint Helens blowing her top.
?ÿ
@noodles Ok, that is helpful. I thought that may be the bulge, but wasn't sure. Thanks
@noodles Looking at the full resolution image, I'm willing to bet a $1 that Peter Lipman was using an old-style Wild T-2 on a Wild 21b tripod. The pattern of "white circles" matches the knobs on an old-style T-2.
P.S. It could be a Wild 21a tripod, but those were normally used with levels.
I'll take your word for it. It's neat to hear them mention Surveying in their posts! ????
@gene-kooper Hi Gene, I agree, it looks like an old style T-2 to me. My favorite instrument of all time.
Just received this a few minutes ago.....
Advertising chocolate for Mom's Day.
PS: I'm such a chocolaholic I'll even eat M&M's when desperate. ????
@dougie Yes it does. Never had the chance to see both photos right next to each other.
@flga
Aww...*Sniffles* I use to buy my mom Sees Chocolates for Mothers Day. ???
I am a chocolaholic too. I have to be careful!! Otherwise I'd gain back all of the weight I lost! ???? ????
